Sinova Global, a prominent silicon metal production company with operations across Canada and the USA, today announced the re-opening of its Sinova Quartz quarry near Golden, British Columbia. This strategic initiative is poised to establish a secure, domestic supply chain for high-purity silicon metal, a material vital to numerous foundational and emerging industries.
The Sinova Quartz quarry, renowned for housing one of the world’s only 99.8% pure hard rock quartz deposits, is fully permitted and boasts immediate access to critical road and rail infrastructure. This seamless connectivity will facilitate efficient transport of the extracted quartz to Sinova’s silicon metal plant, currently under construction in Tiptonville, Tennessee, USA. The output from this quarry will be instrumental in producing the high-quality, high-purity silicon metal essential for critical applications in aluminium and steel manufacturing, grid storage solutions, advanced semiconductor technology, and solar energy generation.
To spearhead the construction and quartz extraction efforts, Sinova has partnered with Speers Construction Inc., a Jim Dent Company. Speers, a local contractor deeply rooted in the Golden community, brings extensive experience in quartz operations to the project. Chad Slee, Vice President of Resource Operation for Sinova Quartz, emphasized the shared values with their chosen contractor: “Speers shares our commitment to meeting high safety standards and maintaining open engagement with all stakeholders, particularly our local community in Golden. Together, we will maximize the positive economic and social impact that Sinova Global is generating in British Columbia.” Michael Speerbrecker, CEO of Speers Construction, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project's potential to unlock downstream industries and emphasizing their commitment to safety and responsible ecological practices.
Jayson Tymko, President and CEO of Sinova Global, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are pleased to be re-opening the quarry after many years of careful planning and permitting. This is a significant step forward in facilitating a secure supply chain for this much needed material in a way that can create lasting value for both our global partners and our local community.” His sentiments underscore the dual benefit of the project: strengthening North America's industrial resilience while fostering local economic growth.
Sinova Global’s commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in the meticulous planning that preceded the quarry’s reopening. Extensive environmental studies have informed the development of comprehensive construction and operational plans designed to avoid, minimize, and mitigate adverse environmental impacts. These plans encompass a wide range of critical areas, including safety protocols, vegetation management, wildlife protection, soil conservation, erosion and sedimentation control, fugitive dust management, archaeological chance find procedures, traffic management, and water resource protection.
