SK Incheon Petrochem has introduced B30, a new marine fuel containing 30% bio-based materials, in response to growing regulatory pressure to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry.
The B30 fuel is a blend of SK Incheon Petrochem’s Straight Run Fuel Oil (SRFO) and biofuel provided by JC Chemical, mixed in a 7-to-3 ratio. This product was developed in collaboration with SK Innovation’s Institute of Environmental Science & Technology and meets ISO 8217 international fuel standards. Official supply began April 26.
The B30 marine fuel delivers an estimated 25% reduction in carbon emissions compared with traditional marine fuels. It has earned International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU), validating its environmental benefits and greenhouse gas reduction potential.
This launch aligns with mid-term climate targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from marine fuels by 21% compared with 2008 levels by 2030. Ships failing to meet these standards will be subject to cost penalties based on their emission levels, a measure adopted during the IMO’s 83rd Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting on April 11.
One of B30’s key features is its use of SRFO, a fuel derived from ultra-light crude oil in a single-step process without cracking. This method yields higher energy output, improved safety, and fewer impurities compared to fuels made from multiple feedstocks. These qualities enhance fuel efficiency and reduce maintenance costs for vessels.
The combination of SRFO with biofuel for marine use marks a first in South Korea. SK Incheon Petrochem sees this as a strategic move to meet rising demand for sustainable fuel alternatives in the global maritime sector. The company plans to begin distribution in Korea’s West Sea region and eventually expand its reach internationally.
Yoon Young-ho, head of the B2B Business Office at SK Incheon Petrochem, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability and quality.
“We aim to provide next-generation fuel that combines environmental benefits with superior quality to domestic and international shipping companies through a stable supply system,” Yoon said. “We expect that biofuel-blended marine fuel will establish itself as a sustainable energy transition model for the shipping industry to address greenhouse gas regulations.”
By leveraging its technological advantages and environmental certifications, SK Incheon Petrochem is positioning itself as a key player in the emerging global market for cleaner marine fuels.
