Snam and GTSOU partner to boost gas cooperation, energy security, and sustainability through LNG, pipeline integration, and renewable gas research.

Snam, a key player in Europe’s gas infrastructure sector, has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU), the state-owned company responsible for operating Ukraine’s natural gas transmission system. This agreement marks a strategic step towards enhancing cooperation between the Italian and Ukrainian gas sectors with a shared objective of reinforcing energy security, promoting regional integration, and supporting the long-term sustainability of the European energy landscape.

The memorandum was officially signed in Rome by Agostino Scornajenchi, CEO of Snam, and Vladyslav Medvediev, the acting CEO of GTSOU. The signing took place on the sidelines of the fourth Ukraine Recovery Conference, an event dedicated to discussing the immediate recovery efforts and long-term rebuilding of Ukraine following the ongoing crisis.

This collaboration is expected to explore and assess multiple avenues of joint interest. One key focus area includes examining the potential for increased transport of both pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) between Italy and Ukraine. Given Ukraine's vast underground gas storage capacity, the possibility of integrating these facilities into broader European gas supply strategies will also be explored. Such integration could offer significant benefits for the flexibility and stability of gas supply across Europe, especially in times of crisis or peak demand.

Furthermore, the cooperation will extend to the creation of a joint platform focused on best practices for maintaining and managing gas networks. Sharing technological expertise and operational strategies is anticipated to enhance the efficiency, resilience, and modernization of gas infrastructure in both countries.

Another notable component of the agreement is the commitment to researching and developing renewable gas transportation technologies. This initiative is aligned with the broader energy transition goals of both nations and the European Union, which include the decarbonization of the gas sector and the adoption of cleaner, more sustainable energy sources such as hydrogen and biomethane.

This strategic partnership represents more than just bilateral cooperation. It highlights a shared vision of building a resilient and sustainable energy future for Europe. By combining resources and expertise, Snam and GTSOU aim to contribute to a more secure and integrated European gas market. The partnership also underscores Italy’s continued support for Ukraine’s energy independence and infrastructure development, especially in the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions.

As the European energy landscape evolves in response to security, environmental, and economic pressures, agreements like this serve as important milestones toward collective resilience and sustainable growth.
