Solvay reduces Torrelavega soda ash capacity to address oversupply, cut costs, boost sustainability, and secure long-term operational competitiveness globally.

Solvay has announced a strategic adjustment to its soda ash production capacity at its Torrelavega facility in Torrelavega, aimed at improving competitiveness in an increasingly challenging global market. Beginning in the third quarter of 2026, and subject to the completion of required consultation processes, the company plans to reduce the plant’s soda ash output capacity from 600 kilotons to 420 kilotons. This decision reflects a broader effort by Solvay to align its operations with prevailing market dynamics while ensuring the long-term sustainability of its industrial assets. Importantly, the site’s sodium bicarbonate production will remain unaffected by this adjustment, allowing the company to continue serving key customer segments without disruption.

The move comes in response to persistent structural challenges within the soda ash market, including a global oversupply situation and continued pressure from high energy and carbon costs, particularly in Europe. These factors have significantly impacted production economics, making it necessary for manufacturers like Solvay to optimize capacity and focus on efficiency. By resizing operations at Torrelavega, the company aims to maintain profitability while preserving its strategic presence in the region.

According to Etienne Galan, President of Solvay Soda Ash & Derivatives, the company is taking decisive actions to strengthen both the competitiveness and sustainability of its soda ash business. He emphasized that soda ash remains a critical material for a wide range of essential applications, and Solvay is committed to continuing its leadership in this sector. As part of its long-term strategy, the company is investing in advanced technologies, including the development of carbon-neutral soda ash production processes. These initiatives are aligned with Solvay’s broader energy transition roadmap and are intended to ensure that its operations remain viable and competitive for decades to come.

At the same time, Galan highlighted the importance of having a supportive regulatory framework that reflects the realities of industrial transformation. He noted that significant investments are required to transition toward lower-carbon production methods, and regulatory alignment will be crucial in enabling companies to make these changes effectively.

Going forward, the Torrelavega site will concentrate on serving regional markets for soda ash and premium sodium bicarbonate products. Its geographic proximity to customers, combined with a commitment to sustainable operations, positions the facility as a key regional hub within Solvay’s global network. The company has assured customers that supply continuity will be fully maintained through both the Torrelavega plant and its broader international production network.

Additionally, the revised operational model supports Solvay’s environmental objectives. A major biomass project is underway at the site, which is expected to significantly reduce reliance on coal and lower overall carbon emissions. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to decarbonization and sustainable manufacturing practices.

However, the restructuring will have workforce implications, with a potential reduction of up to 77 positions. Solvay has stated that it is committed to managing this transition responsibly, working closely with employee representatives to implement socially responsible measures and provide appropriate support for affected workers.
