Recently, Stolt Tankers reached a significant milestone in its sustainability journey with its barge, Stolt Main, becoming the first to bunker 100% renewable fuel. The fuel used, HVO100, is the purest form of hydrotreated vegetable oil. This advanced synthetic renewable diesel, derived from processed vegetable oils or animal fats, offers substantial environmental benefits by significantly lowering carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfur emissions compared to conventional diesel. This achievement underscores Stolt Tankers' commitment to reducing its environmental impact and advancing the adoption of cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions in the maritime industry.
For over three years, Stolt Main and other vessels in the Stolt Tankers fleet have been operating on HVO20, a 20% blend of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), which has cut the barge's carbon emissions by 18%. With its recent switch to HVO100, supplied by GoodFuels, Stolt Main will further reduce its CO2 emissions by approximately 90%. This transition to 100% renewable fuel underscores Stolt Tankers' ongoing commitment to significantly lowering its environmental footprint and advancing sustainability in maritime operations.
Stolt Tankers has been exploring and testing biofuels in its fleet for several years as a key component of its long-term sustainability strategy. In 2021, the company formalized this commitment by partnering with GoodFuels, aiming to advance its use of renewable fuels and further its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
Maren Schroeder, President of Stolt Tankers, emphasized the company's dedication to advancing renewable fuel technologies and leading the transition to low-carbon solutions. She highlighted that the switch to HVO100 on the Stolt Main not only aligns with Stolt Tankers' own sustainability goals but also supports broader regulatory and industry targets, such as the European Union's objective of cutting carbon emissions by 55% by 2030. This move reflects the company's proactive approach in both achieving its environmental objectives and complying with emerging industry standards.
