Synthomer partners with Godavari Biorefineries to commercialise bio-based monomers, supporting lower-carbon solutions and accelerating the chemical industry’s sustainability transition.

Synthomer has entered into a strategic partnership with Godavari Biorefineries Limited (GBL) aimed at developing and commercialising bio-based alternatives to conventional fossil-based monomers. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in addressing the growing demand from customers and industries for more sustainable, lower-carbon raw materials, while reinforcing Synthomer’s long-term commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and customer-focused solutions.

As industries across the globe accelerate their transition toward sustainability, the chemical sector is under increasing pressure to reduce its reliance on fossil-derived inputs. In response to this shift, Synthomer and GBL are working together to introduce bio-based butyl acrylate, produced using bio-based butanol supplied by Godavari Biorefineries. This initiative supports the wider adoption of renewable feedstocks and contributes to the decarbonisation of value chains that traditionally depend on petrochemical raw materials.

The partnership enables Synthomer to strengthen its monomers portfolio by integrating more sustainable alternatives without compromising performance or reliability. By commercialising bio-based butyl acrylate, the company is helping customers reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining the high standards required for applications across coatings, adhesives, construction materials, and other industrial uses. This approach aligns with Synthomer’s strategy to offer solutions that balance environmental impact, performance efficiency, and customer needs.

Commenting on the collaboration, Chris Brown, Vice President of ESG at Synthomer, highlighted the importance of partnerships in driving meaningful sustainability outcomes. He stated that working with Godavari Biorefineries allows Synthomer to provide customers with lower-carbon alternatives to fossil-based monomers, supporting their efforts to meet emissions reduction targets. Brown also emphasized that expanding access to bio-based solutions enhances the resilience of Synthomer’s product portfolio, ensuring the company remains responsive to evolving market expectations and sustainability requirements.

From GBL’s perspective, the partnership reflects its broader mission to integrate sustainability into every aspect of its business strategy and innovation roadmap. Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries Limited, noted that sustainability is central to the company’s long-term vision. He explained that the collaboration with Synthomer underscores GBL’s commitment to advancing bio-based alternatives that deliver tangible reductions in carbon emissions across the value chain.

By leveraging renewable feedstocks and its integrated biorefinery capabilities, Godavari Biorefineries aims to support partners and customers in transitioning away from fossil-based materials toward more sustainable solutions. Somaiya further emphasized that collaborations such as this play a critical role in accelerating the adoption of green chemistry practices, fostering a more circular and resilient chemical industry, and contributing to the company’s vision of creating a more sustainable and environmentally responsible world.

Overall, the partnership between Synthomer and Godavari Biorefineries Limited marks an important milestone in the development of bio-based monomers. It demonstrates how collaboration across the chemical value chain can drive innovation, reduce environmental impact, and deliver practical, scalable solutions that meet both sustainability goals and customer expectations.
