Technip Energies and JGC secure FEED contracts for Indonesia’s Abadi LNG, integrating CCS, boosting energy security, and supporting net-zero goals.

Technip Energies, in partnership with JGC Corporation, has secured two major Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contracts for the Abadi LNG project, a flagship development within Indonesia’s Masela Block. This project marks an important milestone for Indonesia’s energy sector, reflecting the nation’s efforts to strengthen its role in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market.

The first of these contracts focuses on the design and engineering of a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit. The FPSO will play a critical role in processing natural gas extracted from the Abadi field. Once treated, the dry gas will be transported via subsea pipeline to an onshore LNG facility for liquefaction.

The second FEED contract covers the onshore LNG plant. This facility will include two LNG processing trains, alongside key supporting infrastructure such as a jetty, a materials offloading facility, and a logistics supply base. At the onshore plant, the gas supplied from the FPSO will undergo further treatment to remove impurities before being liquefied, stored, and made ready for export. An important feature of this process will be the reinjection of captured CO2 back into the gas reservoir, underscoring the project’s commitment to sustainability and reduced emissions.

Marco Villa, Chief Business Officer of Technip Energies, expressed pride in being selected for the dual FEED assignments. He highlighted LNG’s pivotal role as a transition fuel for global energy security, emphasizing that this award underlines the consortium’s proven expertise in LNG and gas FPSO projects. Villa also thanked INPEX, SKK Migas, and other stakeholders for their trust, stating that the robust FEED and EPC proposals will support INPEX’s pathway to a final investment decision.

Echoing these sentiments, Shoji Yamada, Representative Director and President of JGC, described the award as a significant achievement. He noted that the project integrates carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, ensuring that Abadi LNG aligns with global decarbonization goals while providing sustainable energy. Yamada further stressed JGC’s commitment to fostering Indonesia’s economic growth through job creation, local engagement, and active support of the country’s target of reaching net-zero CO2 emissions by 2060.

The Abadi LNG project, once operational, is expected to produce 9.5 million tons of LNG per year, alongside an additional 150 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas for domestic consumption. This output will not only bolster Indonesia’s energy security but will also contribute significantly to Japan’s energy needs, accounting for over 10% of its LNG imports. With its strong sustainability measures, including CCS integration, the Abadi project is positioned as a cornerstone in Indonesia’s journey toward a low-carbon energy future.
