thyssenkrupp Uhde will support Fuella’s two Brazilian green ammonia projects, each producing 400,000 tonnes annually using renewable energy.
thyssenkrupp Uhde has secured pre-Front-End Engineering Design (pre-FEED) contracts from Fuella AS for the development of two large-scale green ammonia facilities in Brazil. The projects, named the Pecém Green Ammonia Project (PeGA) and the Açu Green Ammonia Project (AçuGA), represent significant steps toward establishing Brazil as a major producer and exporter of renewable ammonia. Located at the strategically important Ports of Pecém and Açu, the two facilities are each designed to produce approximately 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually using renewable energy sources.
The award of the pre-FEED contracts marks an important milestone in the advancement of both projects. During this phase, thyssenkrupp Uhde will focus on refining and optimizing the technical concepts, conducting critical engineering studies, and strengthening the commercial viability of the projects. The objective is to develop a solid technical and economic foundation that will support future investment decisions and facilitate the progression toward construction and operation.
The engineering work will leverage thyssenkrupp Uhde’s proprietary uhde® ammonia synthesis technology, which has been specifically developed to address the unique challenges associated with renewable-powered ammonia production. Unlike conventional ammonia plants that operate under steady energy supply conditions, green ammonia facilities rely on renewable electricity sources such as wind and solar power, which can fluctuate depending on weather conditions. The company’s technology is designed to efficiently manage these dynamic operating environments while maintaining reliable production performance.
In addition to supplying the ammonia synthesis technology, thyssenkrupp Uhde will provide comprehensive integration engineering services across the entire production chain. This includes the integration of electrolysis systems used to generate green hydrogen, balance-of-plant infrastructure, utilities, storage systems, and ammonia export and offloading facilities. By overseeing the integration of these interconnected components, the company aims to ensure efficient plant performance, operational reliability, and optimized project economics.
The PeGA and AçuGA developments are expected to play a key role in supporting the global energy transition. Green ammonia is increasingly viewed as an important low-carbon energy carrier and a sustainable alternative for industries seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Beyond its traditional use in fertilizer production, green ammonia is gaining attention as a potential fuel for maritime transport, power generation, and hydrogen storage applications.
Nadja Håkansson, Chief Executive Officer of thyssenkrupp Uhde and Chief Operating Officer of thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies, emphasized the significance of the collaboration. She noted that the partnership combines thyssenkrupp Uhde’s extensive experience in ammonia technology with Fuella’s ambition to establish large-scale renewable ammonia hubs in Brazil. According to her, the projects demonstrate a shared commitment to accelerating the global transition toward cleaner energy systems and creating sustainable solutions for future ammonia markets.
Fuella AS Managing Director Dr. Thorsten Helms also expressed confidence in the partnership, highlighting thyssenkrupp Uhde’s technical expertise, understanding of local market conditions, and collaborative approach. He stated that these strengths were key factors in Fuella’s decision to select the company for its first Brazilian green ammonia developments.
As the projects move through the pre-FEED stage, both companies aim to advance commercial milestones, refine execution strategies, and prepare for subsequent development phases. If successfully implemented, the Pecém and Açu facilities could become major green ammonia production centers, supporting Brazil’s growing role in the global renewable energy and sustainable fuels market.
