Quiluma gas field launch boosts Angola LNG supply, strengthens exports to Europe and Asia, and supports long-term energy market stability.

TotalEnergies has officially announced the commencement of production from the Quiluma offshore gas field in Angola, marking a significant milestone for the country’s energy sector. The company holds an 11.8% participating interest in the project, which is being operated by Azule Energy with a 37.4% stake. Other key stakeholders involved in the consortium include Cabinda Gulf Oil Company, which owns 31%, and Sonangol E&P with a 19.8% share.

The launch of production from the Quiluma field represents a landmark development, as it is the first non-associated gas project to be brought online in Angola. Unlike associated gas, which is produced alongside crude oil, non-associated gas fields are dedicated exclusively to gas extraction. This distinction highlights the country’s evolving strategy to diversify its hydrocarbon resources and strengthen its position in the global natural gas market.

Gas produced from the Quiluma field will play a crucial role in supporting the operations of the Angola LNG plant, which is a key infrastructure asset for exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG). The LNG facility has been instrumental in supplying energy to international markets, particularly in Europe and Asia, where demand for cleaner energy sources continues to grow. By ensuring a steady and reliable gas supply, the Quiluma project is expected to enhance the operational stability and efficiency of the LNG plant.

At peak production levels, the Quiluma field is projected to deliver approximately 330 million cubic feet of gas per day. This output translates to roughly 2 million tonnes of LNG annually, making it a substantial contributor to Angola’s overall gas production capacity. The consistent flow of gas from this project will not only support domestic energy needs but also reinforce the country’s export capabilities, positioning Angola as a more prominent supplier in the global LNG landscape.

According to Mike Sangster, Senior Vice-President for Africa, Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies, the development is a strategic step toward securing a sustainable, long-term gas supply for the Angola LNG plant. He emphasized that the project strengthens Angola’s ability to reliably deliver LNG to international markets over the long term, particularly to regions such as Europe and Asia that are actively seeking diversified energy sources.

Overall, the start-up of the Quiluma offshore gas field underscores Angola’s commitment to expanding its gas infrastructure and optimizing resource utilization. It also aligns with broader global trends favoring cleaner energy alternatives, as natural gas is often viewed as a transitional fuel in the shift toward lower-carbon energy systems. With strong collaboration among international and national partners, the project sets a precedent for future gas developments in the region and reinforces Angola’s growing role in the global energy market.
