TotalEnergies and partners approve the Umm Shaif Gas Cap project, boosting UAE gas output, condensate recovery, and long-term low-emission energy production.

TotalEnergies has announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Umm Shaif Gas Cap Development, a major offshore natural gas project located within the Umm Shaif and Nasr concession in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The company holds a 20% participating interest in the concession, alongside ADNOC (60%), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) (10%), and Eni (10%), while ADNOC Offshore will oversee operations as the project operator.

The Umm Shaif offshore field, which has been producing hydrocarbons since 1962, is one of Abu Dhabi's oldest and most strategically important offshore assets. The newly approved project aims to develop the gas cap located above the field’s existing oil reservoirs, enabling the extraction of substantial natural gas resources while improving condensate recovery from the reservoir.

According to project plans, the development is expected to deliver more than 600 million cubic feet of natural gas per day by 2030. The project has also been designed with future scalability in mind, offering the potential to increase production capacity to as much as 1.5 billion cubic feet per day over the longer term. This expansion would significantly strengthen the UAE’s domestic gas supply while supporting its long-term strategy to enhance energy security and meet growing industrial and power generation demand.

The project will capitalize on existing offshore infrastructure, reducing the need for extensive new facilities and lowering overall capital expenditure. Additionally, the use of electricity supplied from the UAE’s national power grid is expected to minimize operational emissions, aligning the development with lower-carbon production objectives and supporting Abu Dhabi’s broader sustainability goals.

The investment follows the successful award of the 40-year Umm Shaif and Nasr concession in 2018, reinforcing TotalEnergies’ long-term commitment to Abu Dhabi’s upstream energy sector. As Asset Lead, the company continues to collaborate closely with ADNOC and its partners to maximize the value of existing offshore resources while expanding the emirate’s integrated gas value chain.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, described the FID as a significant milestone achieved in partnership with ADNOC and the concession partners. He noted that, following the recent award of the Bab Gas Cap concession, the Umm Shaif development represents another important step toward unlocking Abu Dhabi’s extensive natural gas resources. He added that the project will contribute to TotalEnergies’ upstream production portfolio beyond 2030 through the development of competitive, low-cost, and lower-emission gas resources.

Impact on Product and Chemical Commodity Prices

The Umm Shaif Gas Cap development will strengthen the UAE's natural gas and condensate production capacity, improving feedstock availability for power generation, LNG, refining, and petrochemical manufacturing. Over the medium to long term, increased gas supply could stabilize domestic natural gas prices and enhance the availability of petrochemical feedstocks such as methane, ethane, propane, and butane, supporting the production of ammonia, methanol, ethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, and urea. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the project is expected to ease feedstock supply constraints, improve production economics, and exert moderate downward pressure on regional petrochemical and fertilizer prices once commercial production ramps up.
