TotalEnergies begins production from Angola’s BEGONIA and CLOV Phase 3 projects, adding 60,000 barrels daily via low-emission subsea tie-backs.

TotalEnergies has officially commenced production from two major offshore oil projects in Angola—BEGONIA and CLOV Phase 3—marking a significant step in expanding low-cost and low-carbon production capacities in the region. Both projects capitalize on the unused processing capacity of existing floating production, storage, and offloading units (FPSOs), specifically PAZFLOR and CLOV, enabling the addition of a combined 60,000 barrels of oil per day.

The BEGONIA development stands out as the first inter-block offshore project in Angola, situated in Block 17/06. Operated by TotalEnergies (30%), BEGONIA reflects the outcome of strong collaboration among various stakeholders, including Angola’s national oil and gas agency, Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG), and consortium partners Sonangol E&P (30%), SSI (27.5%), ETU Energias (7.5%), and Falcon Oil (5%). The BEGONIA project, located about 150 kilometers from the Angolan coast, comprises five wells connected via subsea tie-back to the PAZFLOR FPSO. It is expected to contribute 30,000 barrels per day to the country's production output.

Similarly, CLOV Phase 3, developed in Block 17 and also operated by TotalEnergies (38%), has reached first oil. The project is a collaboration with key partners including Equinor (22.16%), ExxonMobil (19%), Azule Energy (15.84%), and Sonangol E&P (5%). Positioned 140 kilometers offshore, this phase adds another 30,000 barrels per day through four new wells connected to the CLOV FPSO.

Both BEGONIA and CLOV Phase 3 exemplify TotalEnergies’ broader strategy of enhancing upstream operations with a focus on efficiency, sustainability, and leveraging existing infrastructure to minimize both capital expenditures and environmental footprint. Nicolas Terraz, President of Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies, emphasized that these developments are part of the company’s larger goal of increasing upstream production by over 3% in 2025. “These projects demonstrate how we are using available capacity in existing FPSOs while simultaneously cutting costs and emissions,” he stated.

Paulino Jerónimo, Chairman of ANPG, lauded the achievements as crucial for maintaining Angola’s oil production above the threshold of 1 million barrels per day. He highlighted BEGONIA’s status as a pioneering cross-block initiative and commended the local content component it incorporates. CLOV Phase 3 was praised for being the result of extensive coordination and technical collaboration between the concessionaire and the Block 17 contractor group led by TotalEnergies. “Projects like these showcase the innovative and dynamic character of Angola’s oil sector,” he added.

Together, these milestones affirm Angola’s position as a vital player in the global oil industry, while reinforcing TotalEnergies' commitment to delivering cost-effective, sustainable energy solutions through partnerships and innovation.
