TotalEnergies Secures 15-Year Renewable Power Deal with Google for Ohio Data Centers

Google and TotalEnergies have signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the supply of 1.5 TWh of certified renewable electricity from TotalEnergies' Montpelier solar farm in Ohio, bolstering Google's commitment to carbon-free data center operations.

In a significant move for both the renewable energy sector and corporate decarbonization efforts, TotalEnergies and Google announced today a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This landmark deal will see TotalEnergies supply Google with a total volume of 1.5 TWh of certified renewable electricity sourced from its nearly complete Montpelier solar farm in Ohio. The power will be channeled through the PJM grid system, the largest in the United States, directly supporting Google’s robust data center operations within the state.

The agreement underscores a shared strategic vision between the energy major and the tech giant. For Google, the PPA is a concrete step in its strategy to enable and source new, carbon-free energy directly to the grid systems where its energy-intensive data centers operate. Data centers, which accounted for approximately 3% of the world’s energy demand in 2024, are a key focus area for corporate sustainability, making the shift to renewable power a priority for leading technology companies.

Will Conkling, Director of Clean Energy and Power at Google, emphasized the broader impact of the collaboration: "Strengthening the grid by deploying more reliable and clean energy is crucial for supporting the digital infrastructure that businesses and individuals depend on. Our collaboration with TotalEnergies will help power our data centers and the broader economic growth of Ohio."

The deal also significantly advances TotalEnergies’ strategy to provide tailored energy solutions, particularly to major consumers like data center operators. Stéphane Michel, President Gas, Renewables & Power at TotalEnergies, commented on the mutually beneficial nature of the partnership: "We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Google with this agreement to supply renewable electricity to their data centers in Ohio. This agreement illustrates TotalEnergies’s ability to meet the growing energy demands of major tech companies by leveraging its integrated portfolio of renewable and flexible assets."

The PPA is a testament to TotalEnergies’ aggressive expansion in the US renewable market. The company is actively developing a 10 GW portfolio across the United States, which includes onshore solar, wind, and battery storage projects. Specifically, 1 GW of this capacity is strategically located within the PJM market, the same region hosting the Montpelier solar farm. Another 4 GW is being deployed in the ERCOT market in Texas.

This PPA with Google follows a series of similar, high-profile agreements TotalEnergies has secured with other major corporations globally, including Amazon, Microsoft, Data4, STMicroelectronics, and Saint-Gobain, among others.
