Towngas and CIMC ENRIC partner to boost green methanol and hydrogen energy development, supporting Hong Kong’s low-carbon transition strategy.
The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) and CIMC ENRIC Holdings Limited (CIMC ENRIC) have officially entered into a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of green methanol and hydrogen energy. This collaboration is designed to support Hong Kong’s transition toward a cleaner, low-carbon energy future.
The agreement highlights a shared commitment to advancing technical cooperation and engineering services related to green methanol, while also aligning efforts in the establishment of industry standards and compliance with carbon trading mechanisms. Towngas, a pioneer in the green energy space, is notably the first Chinese enterprise to receive both ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications for large-scale green methanol production. It will utilize its extensive green methanol supply chain, integrating capabilities across sourcing, production, and distribution, to drive technological innovation and market development in collaboration with CIMC ENRIC.
CIMC ENRIC brings its broad expertise in clean energy technologies, particularly within the maritime and logistics sectors, into the partnership. Together, the companies aim to promote the adoption of green methanol by exploring new technologies and applications across industries. The partnership also positions Hong Kong, with its status as a global financial and logistics hub, as a catalyst for green energy transformation in the region.
In addition to their green methanol initiative, Towngas and CIMC ENRIC have signed a separate cooperation agreement focused on the advancement of hydrogen energy projects. This includes work on the full hydrogen energy value chain—spanning hydrogen extraction, purification, storage, transportation, and utilization. Towngas already incorporates hydrogen into approximately 50% of its gas supply in Hong Kong, which is distributed through an underground pipeline network covering more than 3,700 kilometers. The partnership is expected to enhance hydrogen technologies and broaden their application in various areas, including public and private transportation, electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, and other urban infrastructure.
This collaboration reflects both companies’ dedication to clean energy innovation and sustainability. Towngas continues to invest heavily in renewable energy and low-carbon solutions, aligning with China’s national “dual carbon” goals—to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060—as well as the Hong Kong SAR Government’s target to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
By leveraging each other’s technical strengths and market presence, Towngas and CIMC ENRIC intend to set a benchmark for the development of green methanol and hydrogen energy in Hong Kong and beyond, contributing significantly to regional and global climate goals.
