Towngas delivers 5,000 tonnes of certified green methanol to Golden Island in Singapore, advancing sustainable marine fuel adoption in Asia.

The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has successfully completed its commitment to supply green methanol to Singapore-based Golden Island Pte Ltd for bunkering trials. As part of this agreement, Towngas delivered 5,000 tonnes of green methanol certified under the ISCC EU standard. The delivery was carried out in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation and represents a significant step in supporting low-emission marine fuel alternatives within the region.

This green methanol, sourced from Towngas’s production facility in Inner Mongolia, was initially stored at Tianjin Vopak’s terminal at Tianjin Port. From there, it was loaded onto the Golden Antares, a bunker vessel operated by Golden Island, and transported to Singapore for bunkering operations. The use of this fuel offers a substantial environmental advantage, reducing carbon intensity by over 75% compared to conventional Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), which is widely used in maritime shipping.

Sham Man-fai, Chief Operating Officer of Green Fuels & Chemicals at Towngas, emphasized the significance of the milestone, stating, “This successful delivery underscores our capacity to meet green methanol supply commitments reliably and demonstrates the effectiveness of our investments in sustainable fuel solutions. We are committed to developing scalable, low-carbon fuel technologies that align with the decarbonisation goals of the global shipping sector.”

Golden Island’s Marine Fuel Department General Manager, Tomohiro Yamano, echoed similar sentiments. “This delivery forms a foundational step in our mission to support the maritime industry's transition to cleaner fuels. Our collaboration with Towngas is instrumental in promoting the broader adoption of green methanol in Asia and reflects our deep commitment to reducing emissions in the shipping sector,” he remarked.

Liu Xiaomei, General Manager of Tianjin Vopak, noted the strategic importance of the initiative. “Supporting the transport and storage of 5,000 tonnes of domestically produced green methanol signifies the maturing of the green fuel supply chain in the Asia-Pacific region. Our infrastructure, beginning with Tianjin and extending through Vopak’s network, is laying the groundwork for a robust regional supply chain in green marine fuels,” she said.

Towngas’s green methanol is produced using proprietary technology that converts agricultural and forestry waste, along with scrap tyres, into renewable fuel. The Inner Mongolia facility stands out as the first on the Chinese mainland to obtain ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications for green methanol production. Plans are already underway to boost its annual output from 100,000 tonnes to 150,000 tonnes by the end of 2025.

Additionally, Towngas is expanding its green methanol footprint through a partnership with Foran Energy. Together, they aim to establish several production facilities across China, targeting a combined annual capacity of one million tonnes. This expansion, combined with the successful execution of its first major cross-border delivery, further cements Towngas’s position as a leading supplier of sustainable marine fuels in Asia.
