CF Industries, Trafigura, and TFG Marine partner to promote low-carbon ammonia as marine fuel, focusing on logistics, markets, and bunkering.
CF Industries, Trafigura, and TFG Marine have formalized a strategic collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the use of low-carbon ammonia as a sustainable marine fuel. This partnership builds upon the successful prior collaboration between CF Industries and Trafigura in shipping low-carbon ammonia, reflecting a shared commitment to support the global maritime sector’s transition toward decarbonization and lower emissions.
The MoU establishes a structured framework for cooperation among the three companies, focusing on the promotion and integration of low-carbon ammonia into the marine fuel market. Under this agreement, CF Industries, Trafigura, and TFG Marine will join forces to develop markets, engage stakeholders, and plan the logistical aspects of ammonia bunkering. The initial phase of this collaboration will concentrate on key regions, specifically the U.S. Gulf Coast and Northwest Europe, which are pivotal for ammonia production, shipping, and bunkering activities.
CF Industries will utilize its established production and export infrastructure for low-carbon ammonia at its Donaldsonville, Louisiana, facility. The company’s capabilities in manufacturing and distributing low-carbon ammonia position it as a critical supplier for marine fuel applications. Trafigura, with its deep experience in commodity trading and logistics, will contribute expertise in market development and distribution strategies, facilitating broader adoption of ammonia as an alternative, low-emission fuel.
TFG Marine, a joint venture formed by Trafigura, Frontline, and Golden Ocean Group, will play a central role in ensuring the practical implementation of ammonia bunkering. Leveraging its global marine fuel supply network and extensive bunkering capabilities, TFG Marine will coordinate the last-mile delivery of ammonia, manage bunkering demand, and transport ammonia to strategically located bunkering hubs worldwide. This operational synergy ensures that low-carbon ammonia can be supplied efficiently and reliably to ships, supporting maritime decarbonization initiatives.
By combining production, logistics, and bunkering expertise, this collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon ammonia, contributing to the broader effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the shipping industry. It reflects a growing recognition among energy and marine transport leaders that low-carbon fuels, including ammonia, are essential for achieving long-term sustainability goals and meeting increasingly stringent international emissions standards.
This MoU highlights the companies’ commitment to driving innovation in low-carbon energy solutions, positioning the partnership at the forefront of the global transition to cleaner fuels in the maritime sector. Through market development, stakeholder engagement, and efficient bunkering logistics, CF Industries, Trafigura, and TFG Marine aim to make low-carbon ammonia a viable and scalable alternative for international shipping operations.
