Tsuneishi Solutions has commercially deployed its first methanol fuel supply system, supporting cleaner bulk shipping through compact, Japan-built technology.

Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyobay (T-SOL), the engineering division of the Tsuneishi Group, has successfully delivered a methanol fuel supply system for installation on a Kamsarmax bulk carrier, marking a significant milestone in the company's alternative-fuel technology portfolio. The delivery represents the first commercial application of T-SOL's proprietary methanol low-flashpoint fuel supply system, reinforcing its commitment to advancing cleaner and more sustainable marine propulsion solutions.

The fuel supply system was delivered at the end of May following the successful receipt of Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK in April 2024. This certification confirmed that the system meets the required safety and technical standards for marine applications involving low-flashpoint fuels such as methanol.

Engineered specifically for medium- and low-speed diesel engines, the system is designed to safely deliver methanol to a vessel's main propulsion engine while maintaining high operational reliability. Methanol, considered one of the most promising alternative marine fuels, requires specialized handling because of its low flashpoint and unique chemical properties. T-SOL's newly developed system addresses these challenges by incorporating advanced safety features alongside a compact and efficient design that can be integrated into modern bulk carriers with minimal space requirements.

A distinguishing feature of the fuel supply system is its domestic manufacturing approach. The major components are sourced from Japanese suppliers and the entire system is assembled within Japan. This localized production model offers several practical benefits to shipowners and operators. It eliminates the need for overseas factory acceptance tests, shortens project timelines, reduces logistics costs, and minimizes the requirement for foreign technical personnel to travel to Japan during commissioning and installation. These efficiencies are expected to improve customer convenience while strengthening Japan's domestic marine equipment supply chain.

The commercial deployment also reflects the growing momentum behind methanol-powered shipping as the maritime industry works toward decarbonization. International environmental regulations continue to become more stringent, encouraging shipowners to invest in cleaner propulsion technologies that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve regulatory compliance. Methanol has emerged as a preferred transition fuel because it can significantly lower emissions compared to conventional marine fuels while offering compatibility with evolving engine technologies.

T-SOL believes that demand for methanol fuel supply systems and other alternative-fuel solutions will continue to rise as global shipping accelerates its transition toward low-carbon operations. Increased methanol usage may also stimulate investments across the methanol value chain, including formaldehyde and methanol production infrastructure.
