Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of the technology conglomerate Wärtsilä, has unveiled a groundbreaking Ammonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS) designed for ships capable of operating with ammonia fuel. This innovative system is versatile, accommodating both liquid and gaseous forms of fuel. The introduction of the Wärtsilä AFSS aligns with the maritime industry's ongoing transition toward decarbonized fuels, with ammonia emerging as a prominent candidate due to its potential for substantial reductions in CO2 emissions, minimal sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, and significant reductions in nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions.

Drawing on Wärtsilä Gas Solutions' extensive experience of over 50 years in handling ammonia onboard ships, the AFSS represents a key advancement in enabling decarbonized operations within the maritime sector. Stein Thoresen, Head of Sales Marine at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, emphasized the robustness and reliability of the AFSS, even under challenging sea conditions. The system is envisioned as a pivotal component in facilitating the adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel, contributing to the industry's pursuit of sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.

The versatility of the AFSS extends to its applicability for both new vessels and retrofitting onto existing ships. It can be seamlessly integrated as part of the cargo handling and fuel supply system on ships specifically designed to transport liquefied gas, particularly those engaged in ammonia transport.

An initial deployment of the Wärtsilä Ammonia Fuel Supply Systems is scheduled for installation on two new gas carriers currently under construction at Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) in Korea for Exmar LPG. These Medium Gas Carrier newbuilds mark a historic milestone, being the first ocean-faring vessels equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on ammonia.

The AFSS's capability to accommodate both liquid and gaseous forms of ammonia positions it as a versatile solution for a diverse range of vessels and operational contexts. The system's adaptability allows for seamless integration into various ship types, promoting its adoption across different segments of the maritime industry. As the maritime sector increasingly focuses on environmental sustainability and emissions reduction, the Wärtsilä AFSS emerges as a pioneering solution that addresses the evolving needs of the industry.

The decision to deploy the first Wärtsilä Ammonia Fuel Supply Systems on gas carriers reflects the strategic alignment with vessels involved in the transport of liquefied gas, especially ammonia. These carriers represent an ideal application for ammonia-based propulsion, and the success of this deployment is likely to pave the way for broader adoption across the maritime sector.
