Welcome To ChemAnalyst
US diethylenetriamine (DETA) prices declined 8.49% in July 2026, marking the sharpest monthly correction in the US DETA market, as simultaneous feedstock cost reductions across ethylene oxide and ammonia — the primary raw materials in ethyleneamine synthesis — dramatically lowered the production cost baseline for US Gulf Coast producers, while subdued downstream demand from epoxy curing agent, water treatment, and construction chemical sectors left DETA sellers with limited ability to maintain prior offer levels in the face of the input cost correction.
In July 2026, ethylene oxide costs declined 3.3% while ammonia prices fell a dramatic 8.8% — the latter decline reflecting the broader normalization of global ammonia markets as the US-Iran peace agreement progressively restored Middle Eastern natural gas-derived ammonia production and export flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The combined feedstock cost reduction eliminated the production cost support that had underpinned prior DETA pricing levels during the conflict period, enabling US producers to lower offers while maintaining adequate margins.
The Diethylenetriamine (DETA) Price Index pressure intensified as producers discounted to clear Houston inventories amid domestic supply, with major producers maintaining steady output and utilization limiting tightness despite export enquiries and logistical challenges. US DETA production capacity at Dow Chemical's Texas Operations and Huntsman Corporation's Port Neches facility — major ethyleneamine producers supplying the North American market — continued at broadly stable run rates through July, keeping supply volumes comfortable relative to the subdued demand environment.
On the demand side, conditions remained broadly weak across DETA's primary US end-use channels. The largest pull comes from epoxy resin curing agent formulations for protective coatings, adhesives, and composite materials in construction and marine applications, with additional demand from water treatment as a chelating agent precursor. The US residential construction market continued to face headwinds from elevated mortgage rates and housing affordability constraints, dampening epoxy curing agent procurement from building and infrastructure coating formulators. Water treatment chemical demand provided a more resilient base procurement level for DETA but lacked the seasonal acceleration that would have provided offsetting price support. Buyers increasingly adopted just-in-time procurement due to abundant supply, with export competitiveness falling due to cheaper Asian and MEA cargoes competing at attractive landed cost values in key export destination markets.
Looking ahead, August 2026 is expected to see a further moderate decline in US DETA prices, extending the July correction. The main downside risk is continued Chinese DETA capacity additions and weak European construction activity that limits global price recovery, a dual pressure that is expected to maintain downward pricing bias through August. However, the pace of decline is anticipated to moderate relative to July's sharp 8.49% correction, as ammonia feedstock costs show signs of stabilizing at lower levels following the initial normalization post-peace agreement. Any meaningful recovery for DETA would require a visible pickup in US construction activity or a significant acceleration in water treatment infrastructure procurement — neither of which appears imminent in the August market environment.
