Yara has inaugurated Europe’s largest industrial carbon capture facility in the Netherlands, advancing cross-border CO2 storage and low-carbon fertilizer production.

Yara has officially inaugurated Europe’s largest industrial carbon capture facility at its Sluiskil ammonia and fertilizer complex in the Netherlands, marking a major step toward reducing emissions from energy-intensive industries. The project also establishes Europe’s first complete cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain, connecting CO2 capture and liquefaction in the Netherlands with transportation and permanent storage beneath the Norwegian seabed.

The inauguration brought together Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra, and Yara International President and CEO Svein Tore Holsether.

The facility at Yara Sluiskil can capture and liquefy up to 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from ammonia production. The captured carbon dioxide will be temporarily stored at the Sluiskil site before being transported by Northern Lights vessels to Øygarden, Norway. There, the CO2 will be permanently stored approximately 2,600 metres below the seabed.

With supportive regulatory and market conditions, the project is expected to capture and permanently store around 12 million tonnes of CO2 over 15 years. Yara said the initiative will help reduce the carbon footprint of its production while supporting Europe’s broader climate and industrial competitiveness targets.

The project is particularly significant for the fertilizer and ammonia industries, where reducing process-related emissions can be challenging. CCS allows manufacturers to maintain production while lowering greenhouse gas emissions, potentially helping energy-intensive sectors remain competitive as carbon costs increase.

Yara CEO Svein Tore Holsether described the facility as evidence that large-scale industrial decarbonization is achievable today. He also emphasized the need for Europe to reduce emissions without undermining industrial activity, employment and critical supply chains.

European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra highlighted the importance of practical climate solutions that combine emissions reductions with industrial competitiveness. Meanwhile, Northern Lights Managing Director Tim Heijn said the project demonstrates that cross-border CO2 transportation and permanent storage can become a viable solution for European industry.

Beyond conventional fertilizer production, the CCS project could support the development of lower-carbon products and value chains. These include low-carbon fertilizers, lower-carbon ammonia for industrial and energy applications, and low-carbon fuels for maritime transportation.

The inauguration therefore represents more than a single facility launch. It demonstrates how cooperation among industrial companies, governments and shared infrastructure providers can accelerate Europe’s emerging carbon-management market and support the transition toward a lower-carbon industrial economy.

Chemanalyst Price Impact

The project is expected to strengthen Yara’s position in low-carbon ammonia and fertilizer markets by reducing the carbon footprint of production and lowering exposure to carbon taxation on captured emissions. Increased availability of low-carbon ammonia could support demand from fertilizers, shipping fuel and clean-energy applications. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the immediate price impact is likely to be limited because the captured volume represents a relatively small share of global ammonia supply. However, over the medium term, wider CCS adoption could increase production costs through investment and operating expenses, potentially supporting ammonia and fertilizer prices, while greater low-carbon supply could create differentiated pricing between conventional and low-carbon products.
