[Online Quarterly Update] Global Ethanolamine Market experienced considerable growth as its demand reached 2.16 million tonnes in 2021 and it is expected to grow at a healthy CAGR of 4.15% during the forecast period (2022-35).
Ethanolamine’s are bi-functional organic compounds containing both, Amine & Alcohol, functional group, & are therefore capable of reacting at both ends, thus giving it a wide range of properties. It is one of the most versatile member of EO derivatives family. It appears as a colourless & viscous hygroscopic liquid in room temperature giving out characteristic unpleasant odour of ammonia. Ethanolamine reacts with many compounds such as carbon dioxide, ammonia, sulfuric acid, carbon disulphide, thionyl chloride, sodium hydroxide and with acids and aromatic aldehydes. They can dissolve oils in them.
Based on type, Ethanolamine market is segmented into Mono Ethanolamine, Di Ethanolamine & Tri Ethanolamine depending on number of ethyl alcohol group attached with Ammonia.
The Commercial method for producing Ethanolamine is by the reaction of Ammonia or Amine containing compound with Ethylene Oxide in liquid phase acid catalysed reactor. Mono-, Di- & Tri-ethanolamine’s are produced in the reactor which are sent for separation into downstream distillation columns. The reaction is highly exothermic, therefore anhydrous ammonia is used. By varying the ratio of EO & Ammonia, we shift the product split among the mono-, di-, and tri-ethanolamine.
The increasing demand for Ethanolamine in broad spectrum of End user industries like, soaps & detergents, oil & gas treatment, cosmetics & personal care, agrochemicals, textile, pharmaceuticals & chemicals synthesis is driving the market around the world.
MEAs (Mono ethanolamine’s) finds applications in surfactants, textile finishing & wood treatment, personal care products, corrosion inhibitors in oil well chemicals & metalworking & as stability catalysts. They are extensively used in the manufacturing of ethylenediamines.
DEAs (Di ethanolamine’s) are commonly used in manufacturing of soaps, surfactants for laundry detergents, cosmetics, hair conditioning & shampoos. It is also used in gas purification, manufacturing of cement additives, agrochemicals & herbicides. TEAs (Tri ethanolamine’s) are majorly used in detergents, gas treatment & personal care products.
Among this end user industry, owing to increasing urbanization & improved quality of life, the Soaps & Detergents sector is anticipated to dominate the global Ethanolamine market with a market share of around 37%. As a result, the DEAs demand is projected to go up in coming years.
Among different regions, the Asia Pacific region with a share of 43% dominated the global Ethanolamine market in 2021 and is likely to maintain its supremacy in the forecast period as well. Ethanolamine is consumed increasingly in growing populated regions of China, India & Indonesia due to its high demand in surfactants & cosmetics industry which is driving the Ethanolamine market across the APAC region. Recently in 2020, China has added new Capacities in Guangdong province to manufacture this product.
North America holds the second largest share of Ethanolamine in terms of demand & is largest manufacturer of Ethanolamine. Owing to several developments in its end user industries, its market is growing at a healthy pace. Followed by them, Middle East & Africa and South American market is also projected to grow to meet the demand of their growing population. Sadara chemical production from its newly built plant in 2017 in Saudi Arabia’s industrial city Al-Jubail is operating at near full efficiency to meet the growing demand of the product.
Major players operating in the Ethanolamine market include Dow Chemical Company (USA), INEOS Oxide (USA, France), Huntsman Corporation (USA), Sadara Chemical (Saudi Arabia), Oxiteno Chemical (Brazil), Saudi Kayan (Saudi Arabia), Dow (Union Carbide) - Petronas JV (Malaysia), Sintez OKA Group of Companies (Russia), Nippon Shokubai (Japan), Lotte Chemical (China), Arak Petrochemical Complex (Iran), Sasol (Germany), IDESA Group (Mexico), Oriental Union Chemical Corp.
