AGC Biologics will manufacture Teikoku Seiyaku’s lumbar disc therapy candidate, strengthening global biopharma supply chain resilience and production flexibility.
AGC Biologics has been selected by Teikoku Seiyaku Co., Ltd. to provide comprehensive microbial contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) services for KTP-001, a recombinant human matrix metalloproteinase-7 (rhMMP-7) drug substance aimed at treating lumbar disc herniation. This strategic partnership underscores the growing importance of robust, global manufacturing capabilities within the biopharmaceutical industry.
The collaboration will see AGC Biologics, a prominent global CDMO recognized for its expertise in developing and manufacturing various therapeutic proteins and advanced therapies, leverage its extensive international network. The initial phase of the project, including cell bank creation, will commence at AGC Biologics' Microbial Center of Excellence in Heidelberg, Germany. Subsequently, process development and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing to support clinical trials will transition to their facility in Chiba, Japan.
Teikoku Seiyaku, a long-standing leader in transdermal drug delivery with a mission focused on pain relief, chose AGC Biologics due to its proven track record in microbial manufacturing and its unique global footprint. AGC Biologics stands out as the only CDMO offering microbial manufacturing capabilities across three continents—Asia, North America, and Europe—with sites in Japan, the U.S., Germany, and Denmark.
This multi-continental network is a critical factor, providing enhanced supply chain security and operational flexibility. In an increasingly complex and "shifting geopolitical landscape," such a diversified manufacturing strategy helps drug developers mitigate risks associated with reliance on a single site or region, ensuring a more stable progression from clinical development to commercialization. Dr. Hiroyuki Kubo, Director and Executive Officer at Teikoku Seiyaku, highlighted AGC Biologics' collaborative spirit and its global presence as essential for the flexibility and security required for this innovative therapy.
The partnership signifies several industry-specific impacts. For AGC Biologics, it reinforces its position as a leading CDMO with robust microbial capabilities and a globally integrated service offering. For Teikoku Seiyaku, it represents a significant step forward in developing KTP-001, potentially offering a novel and less invasive treatment option for patients suffering from lumbar disc herniation. Economically, such agreements represent substantial contracts within the biopharmaceutical sector, driving revenue and growth for CDMOs while enabling pharmaceutical companies to outsource complex manufacturing, thereby focusing on drug discovery and development. The emphasis on supply chain security also points to broader economic resilience in the pharmaceutical supply chain.
