Amogy and GS E&C partner to develop scalable ammonia-based carbon-free power solutions, starting with a 40 MW project in South Korea.
Amogy, a company known for delivering scalable and efficient ammonia-to-power technologies, has entered into a joint venture agreement with GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C), a major South Korean firm specializing in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). This strategic collaboration aims to establish and operate a new joint venture dedicated to advancing ammonia-based distributed power generation solutions, which are increasingly viewed as a promising pathway toward carbon-free energy systems.
The partnership will bring together Amogy’s cutting-edge ammonia cracking technology and GS E&C’s extensive expertise in executing large-scale EPC projects across global markets. By combining these strengths, the two companies intend to accelerate the commercialization and deployment of distributed power systems that rely on ammonia as a clean energy carrier. Amogy’s technology works by converting ammonia into hydrogen, which can then be used to generate electricity. This process provides an efficient and scalable method for producing energy without emitting carbon dioxide, making it a compelling alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
One of the key advantages of this joint solution lies in its simplicity and adaptability. Unlike traditional energy infrastructure that often requires complex and large-scale installations, ammonia-based systems can be deployed in smaller, decentralized locations. This makes them particularly suitable for distributed power generation, where energy is produced close to the point of use. As a result, the system offers both cost efficiency and reduced spatial requirements, making it attractive for industrial and remote applications.
This joint venture builds upon a previously announced initiative in Pohang, where the two companies are collaborating on a significant demonstration project. The project involves the installation of an ammonia-based power generation facility with a capacity of up to 40 megawatts at the Yeongilman Industrial Complex. The facility will utilize green ammonia as a fuel source to generate clean electricity, which will be supplied to meet the energy demands of local industries. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable energy solutions within industrial zones.
Notably, Amogy and GS E&C were selected as joint operators for this project under a Distributed Energy Special Zone designation granted by Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. This designation underscores the importance of the project in advancing the country’s clean energy goals and highlights the government’s support for innovative, low-carbon technologies.
Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy, emphasized that the joint venture reflects the rising global demand for practical and scalable carbon-free energy solutions. He noted that by combining innovative technology with proven EPC capabilities, the partnership aims to deliver turnkey systems that are easy to deploy and operate. He also highlighted that the ongoing Pohang project serves as a critical foundation for scaling these solutions globally.
Similarly, Jin-hong Huh, Senior Executive Vice President of GS E&C, expressed confidence that the joint venture will position the company as a leader in the emerging market for green ammonia-based power generation. He added that successful completion of the pilot project and subsequent commercialization efforts in Pohang will pave the way for expanding the company’s energy portfolio and strengthening its presence in the clean energy sector.
