Axens Selected for Expander Energy’s Canadian SAF Projects

Axens will provide FT Liquid Upgrading technology for Expander Energy’s Canadian SAF and renewable diesel projects using cellulosic biomass feedstocks.

Axens S.A., a France-based technology provider specializing in sustainable refining, biofuels, and low-carbon solutions, has been selected by Canadian renewable fuel producer Expander Energy Inc. to supply its advanced Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Liquid Upgrading technology. The collaboration will support Expander Energy’s plans to develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (RD) production capacity in Canada.

Axens’ technology will be integrated into Expander Energy’s patented Enhanced Biomass to Liquids (EBTL®) and Biomass Electrolysis to Liquids (BETL®) processes. These technologies are designed to convert cellulosic biomass feedstocks into second-generation, drop-in biofuels. Unlike conventional biofuels that may require modifications to existing infrastructure or engines, drop-in fuels can be used within existing fuel systems, improving their potential for large-scale adoption.

The initial deployment of Axens’ FT Liquid Upgrading technology is planned for two commercial-scale developments being advanced by Expander Energy. The first is the Wheatland Bio-Synfuels Facility near Calgary, Alberta, while the second is the Mackenzie Biomass Derived E-Fuels Facility in northern British Columbia. Together, the projects represent an important step in Expander Energy’s strategy to expand the production of lower-carbon fuels from renewable feedstocks.

Both developments are currently advancing through regulatory approval and financing stages. Expander Energy is targeting a final investment decision (FID) for December 2026. Successful completion of these milestones would move the projects closer to construction and eventual commercial production, although actual production timelines will depend on financing, permitting, construction, and commissioning progress.

The partnership extends beyond the two initial projects. Expander Energy has also designated Axens as its strategic upgrading technology provider for a broader pipeline of SAF and Arctic renewable diesel developments. This selection could provide Axens with opportunities to supply its technology across additional projects as Expander Energy expands its renewable fuels portfolio.

The agreement highlights the growing role of advanced biomass conversion and upgrading technologies in the transition toward lower-carbon transportation fuels. Demand for SAF and renewable diesel is increasing as airlines, fuel producers, and governments pursue emissions-reduction targets.

For Expander Energy, access to Axens’ established upgrading technology could strengthen the technical foundation of its biomass-to-fuels projects. For Axens, the collaboration expands its position in Canada’s emerging renewable fuels sector and creates potential opportunities across future SAF and renewable diesel developments.

Product Impact & Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The announcement is positive for SAF and renewable diesel production technology, as Axens’ FT Liquid Upgrading solution could enable commercial-scale conversion of cellulosic biomass into drop-in fuels. However, the immediate impact on physical fuel supply should remain limited because both Canadian projects are still progressing toward regulatory and financing milestones, with FID targeted for December 2026. For commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the move could create long-term bullish demand pressure on biomass-derived feedstocks, hydrogen, synthesis gas-related inputs, catalysts, and other process chemicals if the projects advance. In the near term, prices are likely to see limited direct movement, while stronger demand could support prices once construction and commercial operations begin.
