BASF, a global leader in chemical innovation, today announced a significant Cooperation Agreement with Plug Power, a frontrunner in providing comprehensive green hydrogen solutions. This strategic partnership will see BASF’s cutting-edge Purivate Pd15 DeOxo catalysts integrated into Plug Power’s hydrogen liquefaction plants worldwide.
Under this agreement, BASF becomes a preferred and specified product provider for Plug Power, having successfully undergone a rigorous technical qualification process. The primary focus of this collaboration will be on hydrogen liquefaction plants with capacities of 30, 60, and 90 tons per day.
At the heart of this collaboration are BASF’s advanced DeOxo catalysts, including the innovative Purivate Pd15. These catalysts stand out for their exceptional performance at low temperatures, a key advantage in hydrogen liquefaction processes. This low-temperature efficiency translates to a reduced reliance on expensive precious metals, contributing significantly to the overall economic viability of liquid hydrogen production. The Purivate Pd15 catalyst is specifically designed for the efficient removal of oxygen, a critical step in ensuring the purity and quality of hydrogen for various applications.
Beyond oxygen removal, Plug Power has also qualified BASF’s Sorbead Air for use in their hydrogen plants. Sorbead Air, a specialty aluminosilicate gel, offers an energy-efficient solution for the dehydration of electrolyzed hydrogen. Efficient water removal is paramount in liquefaction processes to prevent ice formation and ensure smooth operation. The incorporation of Sorbead® Air will further enhance the efficiency and reliability of Plug Power’s liquefaction plants.
Detlef Ruff, Senior Vice President, Chemical Catalysts and Adsorbents at BASF, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "BASF has a rich history in hydrogen purification and has built a robust portfolio that features large-scale hydrogen purification units in our own facilities. We are proud to have also earned the approval of other leading players in the green hydrogen sector. This cooperation with Plug Power is a testament to our expertise and the high performance of our purification solutions."
Daniel Kennedy, Vice President, Process Technology at Plug Power, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the benefits for their clientele. "Plug Power has confidence in BASF’s extensive experience and expertise in hydrogen purification. We believe this collaboration will provide our clients with proven and reliable end-to-end solutions that enhance the economic viability of liquid hydrogen plants. Integrating BASF’s advanced catalysts and adsorbents into our liquefaction technology will contribute significantly to the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of producing liquid green hydrogen."
