The Government of Canada, through Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan), has announced a substantial investment of $466,956 in the Canadian Hydrogen Association. This funding aims to propel British Columbia's hydrogen and fuel cell sector onto the global stage, creating new job opportunities within the province.

British Columbia stands as the epicentre of Canada’s hydrogen and fuel cell industry, boasting over half of the nation's hydrogen companies and employing 1,350 full-time workers. This robust ecosystem positions B.C. as a key player in meeting the escalating global demand for low-emission energy solutions. The investment underscores the federal government's commitment to leveraging this provincial strength to drive national economic growth and contribute to a cleaner energy future.

Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for PacifiCan, formally announced the investment at the hy-fcell International Expo and Conference in Vancouver, a significant gathering of global hydrogen experts. "With clean energy innovation, British Columbians are leading Canada into the hydrogen economy," stated Minister Robertson. "This investment supports good jobs, lower emissions, and a stronger Canadian economy—built for today and the future."

The Canadian Hydrogen Association will be the direct beneficiary of this funding, utilizing it to assist B.C. companies in navigating international markets, securing vital investments, and expanding their operations both domestically and abroad. A crucial aspect of this initiative will be showcasing B.C.'s innovative hydrogen and fuel cell companies on prominent international platforms, such as the hy-fcell expo, to connect them with potential partners and customers worldwide.

The funding is expected to directly support approximately 40 small- and medium-sized businesses within the hydrogen and fuel cell sector, contributing significantly to job creation and economic prosperity in B.C.

This latest announcement builds upon previous federal commitments to B.C.'s hydrogen industry. In May 2024, PacifiCan committed over $9.4 million to establish the Clean Hydrogen Hub at Simon Fraser University. This Hub, in collaboration with partners like the Canadian Hydrogen Association, is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge hydrogen production methods and technologies, further solidifying B.C.'s leadership in the field.

PacifiCan, as the federal economic development agency for British Columbia, plays a vital role in fostering innovation, job creation, and inclusive growth throughout the province. Its Regional Innovation Ecosystems program specifically targets investments that empower underrepresented groups and enable businesses to thrive both locally and on the global stage. The Canadian Hydrogen Association, representing over 200 organizations, is a key advocate for advancing hydrogen and hydrogen technology solutions in Canada and internationally, making it an ideal partner in this strategic federal initiative.
