Europe: Bulgaria's gas transmission system operator, Bulgatransgaz, has announced that it's working on a new Hydrogen infrastructure project that would span from Southeast to Central Europe. The project is still in the initial development stages, but it's estimated to require a total investment of around €860 million ($974.4 million) soon. The ambitious project aims to establish a Hydrogen corridor that would connect the two European regions.
A new project is currently in development to integrate with a comparable infrastructure constructed by peer DESFA in Greece. The proposed project involves building a new 250-kilometre pipeline through southwestern Bulgaria, as well as constructing two new compressor stations located in the region of Petrich and Dupnitsa-Bobov Dol.
A new pipeline is set to be commissioned in 2029 to allow for two-way Hydrogen flow between Bulgaria and Greece. This pipeline will feature a brand-new interconnection point in the Kulata-Sidirokastro border region and will be built to transport up to 100% Hydrogen.
Bulgartransgaz is set to invest 438 million euros by 2027 towards adapting their current gas transport infrastructure to support up to 10% Hydrogen. The development of a smart gas grid within the country is currently in its exploratory phase.
The primary objective is to establish pathways for the seamless integration and transportation of renewable gas blends having Hydrogen concentrations as high as 10%.
