Elcogen, a leading European manufacturer of high-performance solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology, and Casale SA, a globally recognized provider of technologies and integrated engineering solutions for ammonia and other base chemicals production, have announced a strategic collaboration. The two companies have formalized their intent to drive innovation in green ammonia production and other Power-to-X (P2X) projects through a non-exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This landmark agreement will see Elcogen and Casale explore mutually beneficial commercial ventures, with a focus on integrating Elcogen’s advanced SOEC stack and stack module technology into Casale’s existing and future plant designs, as well as potentially other P2X applications on a global scale. Conversely, Elcogen will offer its cutting-edge technology platform and associated technical expertise to support Casale in its process design endeavors for developers operating in the international market.
This partnership holds immense potential to accelerate the green energy transition by combining Casale’s well-established and mature process design capabilities with Elcogen’s innovative SOEC technology, renowned for its highly efficient green hydrogen production.
Currently, ammonia production, a crucial industrial process for fertilizers and other applications, heavily relies on hydrogen derived from natural gas. This traditional method is a significant contributor to carbon dioxide emissions due to its dependence on fossil fuels. However, by integrating green hydrogen technology, produced through the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources, into ammonia production, the industry can drastically reduce its environmental footprint, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Mikael Jansen, Director of Business Development at Elcogen, emphasized the transformative potential of solid oxide technology, stating, "Solid oxide technology is rapidly approaching cost parity with PEM and Alkaline systems, and once this milestone is reached, its value proposition will become even more compelling. With the promise of a lower levelized cost of hydrogen, superior scalability, and independence from precious materials like iridium and platinum, SOEC is a future-proof technology poised to become a pivotal player in the green ammonia sector as it matures."
Federico Zardi, CEO of Casale SA, commented on the strategic alignment of the partnership, stating, "Having observed Elcogen’s impressive advancements in solid oxide technology, we recognize a highly complementary fit with Casale’s extensive expertise in process integration and plant design. This collaboration unlocks exciting new possibilities for the industrial application of green hydrogen, particularly within ammonia production and other related technologies. We are confident that this partnership will empower both companies to explore innovative solutions within the Power-to-X domain, building upon our shared commitment to accelerate the global energy transition."
