Enugu State plans a 660MW coal power plant to address electricity shortages, boost industrial growth, attract investment, and support economic expansion.
The Enugu State Government is embarking on a significant energy project, with plans to construct a 660-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant, with groundbreaking slated for July. This initiative is a cornerstone of Governor Peter Mbah's ambitious strategy to elevate the state's economy from its current 4.4 billion to an impressive 30 billion.
The primary catalyst for this venture is the persistent electricity deficit plaguing Nigeria, which has long hindered industrialization and socio-economic development. Enugu aims to tackle this challenge by ensuring a stable and affordable power supply, which is deemed crucial for both businesses and residential consumers. Governor Mbah emphasized that the plant is projected to be commissioned within 24 months of the groundbreaking, ensuring uninterrupted power supply in Enugu post-2027. The project is expected to deliver electricity at a significantly lower cost, making it the cheapest in the country.
Economically, the power plant is anticipated to have profound impacts. It is designed to bolster investor confidence, attract industries, and create numerous job opportunities, thereby directly contributing to the state's economic growth targets. The project will leverage Enugu State's abundant high-quality coal reserves, which are estimated to be sufficient to power the facility for 40 to 50 years. This local sourcing of coal offers a distinct advantage over other thermal plants in Nigeria that often rely on gas transported from distant regions. Furthermore, by-products like coal ash are planned to be utilized for industrial purposes, including the production of cement and ceramic tiles.
From an industry-specific perspective, Enugu State has already distinguished itself by becoming the first subnational entity to establish an electricity market. This was made possible by constitutional and Electricity Act amendments that moved power generation, transmission, and distribution from the Exclusive List to the Concurrent List, empowering states to participate actively in the electricity value chain. The current power plant project signifies a further step, moving beyond market establishment to actual electricity production within the state.
Addressing environmental concerns often associated with coal, Governor Mbah highlighted that Enugu coal possesses low sulphur content and a high calorific value of approximately 7,000 kilocalories per kilogramme. He assured that the administration has undertaken extensive studies over two years and secured the necessary coal assets to guarantee an uninterrupted supply to the plant. Environmental Impact Assessments are also reportedly underway, underscoring a commitment to responsible development. The plant is not only intended to serve Enugu but also potentially extend its benefits to neighboring Anambra and Ebonyi states.
