Ghana Expects 16% Drop in Cocoa Output for 2026/27 Season

Ghana forecasts a 16% decline in cocoa production due to adverse weather, disease, ageing farms, and illegal mining activities.

Ghana, the world's second-largest cocoa producer, expects its cocoa production to decline by at least 16% during the 2026/27 crop season, according to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). The regulator attributed the anticipated decline to unfavorable weather conditions, the cocoa tree's natural production cycle, widespread disease, and structural challenges affecting key farming regions.

The forecast covers the 12-month cocoa season beginning in September 2026. COCOBOD stated that the expected reduction reflects the combined impact of possible El Niño weather conditions, unusually heavy rainfall recorded during May and June, and the cocoa tree's physiological tendency to alternate between years of high and low yields. These factors have significantly reduced the number of healthy cherelles, or young cocoa pods, that successfully mature into harvestable cocoa beans.

The Western and Western North regions, which together contribute more than half of Ghana's total cocoa output, have been particularly affected. COCOBOD reported that low cherelle counts in these areas align with the adverse weather patterns and the crop's natural bearing cycle. In addition, cocoa farms in these regions continue to face mounting pressure from cocoa swollen shoot disease, ageing plantations, and the rapid expansion of illegal gold mining activities.

Illegal mining, commonly referred to in Ghana as "galamsey," has become a major threat to cocoa cultivation. Mining operations frequently occupy agricultural land, displacing cocoa farms and reducing productive acreage. Farmers in the affected regions had already warned of substantially lower pod development this season, raising concerns about next year's harvest.

To minimize production losses, COCOBOD has introduced several intervention measures. These include rehabilitation of farms affected by swollen shoot disease, particularly in the Western North Region, expanded nationwide insecticide and fungicide spraying programs, and the reintroduction of a free fertilizer distribution initiative for the 2026/27 crop year. These efforts aim to improve tree health and support farm productivity despite ongoing environmental and disease-related challenges.

The weaker production outlook in Ghana follows similar concerns across West Africa. Neighboring Ivory Coast, the world's largest cocoa producer, is also expected to experience a production decline exceeding 10% next season. The simultaneous reduction in output from the two leading cocoa-producing nations is likely to tighten global cocoa supplies further, maintaining pressure on international cocoa markets and increasing uncertainty for chocolate manufacturers and food processors worldwide.

Impact on Products and Chemical Commodities

The expected decline in Ghana's cocoa production, combined with weaker output in Ivory Coast, is likely to tighten global cocoa bean availability, increasing production costs for cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, chocolate, confectionery, bakery products, and premium beverages. Manufacturers may pass higher raw material costs to consumers through increased product prices. From ChemAnalyst's perspective, cocoa beans and cocoa-derived products are expected to witness sustained bullish pricing due to constrained supply and firm demand. While the impact on broader chemical commodities remains limited, food ingredients, specialty food additives, and cocoa-processing inputs may experience moderate cost inflation as manufacturers adjust procurement strategies amid supply shortages.
