In a groundbreaking collaboration, Finnish sauna giant Harvia Plc and Japanese automotive titan Toyota Motor Corporation have revealed a revolutionary concept model for what is believed to be the world's first hydrogen-powered sauna. This innovative partnership, announced on June 3, is a unique take on making wellness sustainable and demonstrates the expansive potential of hydrogen combustion technology beyond traditional applications.

The hydrogen sauna operates on a principle that generates only steam and warm air, completely eliminating carbon dioxide emissions during use. This offers a compelling, clean alternative to conventional heating methods, aligning with the urgent global imperative to reduce carbon footprints and combat climate change. The core of this innovation lies in its ability to channel flames and warm air from the hydrogen combustion heater directly through sauna stones, ensuring even heating from all sides. This process not only provides a consistent and gentle warmth but also produces the characteristic pleasant steam, or löyly, when water is poured onto the heated stones – a hallmark of the traditional Finnish sauna experience.

According to Timo Harvia, Head of Innovation and Technology at Harvia, the collaboration with Toyota has been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of sauna innovation. "Toyota’s deep expertise in hydrogen handling and combustion gave us a safe and efficient way to pursue hydrogen as a clean energy source — something we might not have considered this soon without such a trusted partner," Harvia stated. He emphasized that the initiative is not just about minimizing environmental impact but also about crafting a new kind of sauna experience that respects tradition while embracing future technologies.

Mitsumasa Yamagata, President of Hydrogen Factory at Toyota, highlighted the strategic importance of Jyväskylä for Toyota and its TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team (TGR-WRT). Yamagata noted that the project builds upon strong local community trust, fostered under the leadership of Chairman Akio Toyoda. He also credited the Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof) for facilitating the partnership with Harvia, praising Harvia’s dedication to craftsmanship. "I believe this hydrogen sauna opens new possibilities for the future of hydrogen use," Yamagata remarked, underscoring the broader implications of this technological convergence.

The public will have the opportunity to experience this groundbreaking concept model at the "World Sauna Forum," running from June 4–5, 2025, and again during parts of "Rally Finland," scheduled from July 31–August 2, 2025, both held in Jyväskylä. These demonstrations are pivotal for gathering feedback and further exploring the practical applications and societal benefits of hydrogen-powered wellness.
