HyTerra Unveils Bold Strategy to Lead the Global Geologic Hydrogen Race

William Faulkner 23-Dec-2025

HyTerra’s new strategy targets commercialising Kansas hydrogen discoveries while expanding globally using proprietary expertise and partnerships to lead geologic hydrogen markets.

HyTerra Limited has unveiled a comprehensive and forward-looking Strategic Plan designed to transform the company into a leading global player in the rapidly emerging geologic hydrogen industry. The strategy builds directly on the strong technical and operational momentum achieved at its flagship Nemaha Project in Kansas, USA, which has already demonstrated encouraging results and validated HyTerra’s exploration approach.

The newly finalised Strategic Plan is structured around three clearly defined pillars. Together, these pillars aim to commercialise the Nemaha Project while simultaneously expanding HyTerra’s footprint across the United States and into selected international markets. Through this multi-pronged approach, the company intends to position itself at the forefront of the global geologic hydrogen sector, which is increasingly viewed as a critical component of the future low-carbon energy mix.

The strategy builds on the successful completion of HyTerra’s three-well drilling program in Kansas, which delivered strong technical outcomes and enhanced the company’s understanding of subsurface hydrogen systems. In parallel, HyTerra undertook a comprehensive global screening process to identify additional high-potential opportunities. This screening effort benefited significantly from technical insights provided by Fortescue’s expert team, as part of the existing Strategic Alliance between the two companies. The collaboration helped refine HyTerra’s evaluation framework and strengthened its ability to assess geologic hydrogen prospects at scale.

All three pillars of the Strategic Plan are underpinned by the company’s growing competitive advantages, including proprietary knowledge and intellectual property accumulated since 2023. A key outcome of this work has been the development of HyTerra’s “Hydrogen Must Haves,” a proprietary rulebook that defines the critical geological, technical, and operational criteria required to identify regions with high potential for naturally occurring hydrogen. This framework is intended to guide future exploration decisions and ensure disciplined, repeatable project selection.

Alongside internal capability building, HyTerra plans to continue working closely with strategic partners to deploy innovative technologies that could accelerate the commercialisation of geologic hydrogen across the entire value chain. These collaborations are expected to enhance exploration efficiency, reduce development risk, and improve long-term capital efficiency as the company scales.

Commenting on the Strategic Plan, HyTerra Chief Executive Riley Kemp highlighted the significance of recent achievements, noting that 2025 marked a foundational year for the company. The Kansas drilling campaign delivered excellent results, confirming the strong potential of HyTerra’s 100% owned and operated leases. According to Kemp, the team’s growing subsurface expertise and operational experience have now positioned the company to pursue new opportunities with greater confidence.

The Nemaha Project remains central to HyTerra’s growth ambitions. Under Pillar 1, the company will focus on further drilling and production testing to assess sustainable flow rates and establish the commercial viability of both hydrogen and helium. Pillars 2 and 3 will drive expansion across the US and internationally, leveraging HyTerra’s proprietary Hydrogen Must Haves and market-leading technical skillsets to build a diversified portfolio of geologic hydrogen plays. This approach broadens the addressable opportunity set, increases partnership flexibility, and supports more efficient deployment of capital over time.
