Hyundai and Georgia Tech expand partnership to advance hydrogen mobility through research, vehicles, and infrastructure, accelerating zero-emission transportation innovation.
Hyundai Motor Group has entered into an expanded collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), reinforcing their shared commitment to advancing hydrogen-powered mobility, strengthening applied research, and promoting the adoption of zero-emission transportation solutions across the state of Georgia. This renewed agreement builds upon an already strong partnership and introduces new initiatives designed to bridge academic research with real-world implementation.
As part of this collaboration, Hyundai and Georgia Tech aim to transform the university campus into a prominent, real-world demonstration hub for hydrogen mobility in the United States. The initiative includes deploying hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and establishing supporting infrastructure, effectively positioning Georgia Tech as a leading example of how clean energy transportation systems can operate in everyday environments.
A key highlight of the agreement is Hyundai Motor North America’s contribution of four Hyundai NEXO fuel cell electric vehicles. These vehicles will be integrated into campus operations, offering immediate environmental benefits while also serving as practical tools for research and education. In addition, a hydrogen electrolyzer project will be installed at Georgia Tech’s North Avenue Research Area, enabling on-site hydrogen production and further supporting experimentation with sustainable energy systems.
The collaboration is designed to foster interdisciplinary research across multiple domains. Engineering teams will explore advanced hydrogen-based mobility systems and technologies, while sustainability researchers will evaluate the environmental advantages associated with hydrogen energy. Experts in energy systems will study how hydrogen fuel cells can be effectively integrated into existing infrastructure, and public policy scholars will examine regulatory frameworks and societal considerations surrounding hydrogen adoption.
By embedding these technologies directly into campus life, Georgia Tech effectively becomes a “living laboratory,” where students, researchers, and faculty can analyze real-world data and operational challenges. Areas of investigation will include the performance and efficiency of hydrogen-powered vehicles, infrastructure requirements for scaling hydrogen solutions, and the broader environmental impacts of hydrogen as an energy source.
This initiative is also expected to generate insights that extend beyond the campus.
