JERA and bp launch JERA Nex bp, a global offshore wind JV with 13GW capacity, headquartered in London, driving clean energy.

In a strategic move to accelerate the global transition to clean energy, Japanese energy giant JERA and British multinational bp have officially launched JERA Nex bp, a 50:50 joint venture (JV) focused on offshore wind development. The newly established company combines both firms’ expertise and resources to become a leading player in the global offshore wind sector.

JERA Nex bp is set to operate as a developer, owner, and operator of offshore wind assets worldwide. The company starts operations with an impressive net generating capacity of 13 gigawatts (GW), comprising 1 GW of currently installed capacity, a robust 7.5 GW development pipeline, and a further 4.5 GW secured through leases.

The joint venture will initially prioritize the strategic development of its existing pipeline while maintaining safe and efficient operations of its current assets in Europe and Asia. With a focus on disciplined execution, JERA Nex bp aims to continuously evaluate and optimize its portfolio for value creation. The company plans to leverage both internal strengths and external capital sources to support its ambitions and maintain competitive project financing.

Nathalie Oosterlinck, CEO of JERA Nex bp, expressed optimism about the company's potential, saying, “JERA Nex bp starts its journey with a solid operational foundation and a broad development portfolio. By uniting two highly experienced teams from JERA and bp—leaders in Eastern and Western energy markets—we bring unmatched expertise, global reach, and purchasing power. This partnership positions us to unlock new value in offshore wind and become a leader in the sector.”

William Lin, bp’s Executive Vice President for Gas & Low Carbon Energy, emphasized the strategic importance of the JV, calling it “a top-tier global offshore wind developer.” He stated that the venture allows bp to both optimize and unlock value from its low-carbon energy assets. He added, “JERA’s deep project development and operations experience make them a phenomenal partner, and JERA Nex bp is a strong platform to progress our global project pipeline.”

From JERA’s perspective, the formation of the JV marks a milestone in its renewable energy trajectory. Satoshi Yajima, Chief Renewable Energy Officer at JERA and CEO of JERA Nex, noted, “This day represents a major leap forward in JERA’s renewable strategy. With bp as a partner, the venture is well-positioned for long-term success and will serve as a key element in realizing a decarbonized energy future.”

Coinciding with the completion of the JV on August 1, JERA Nex bp Japan has also been launched to focus on offshore wind development within Japan. Masato Yamada, previously a Managing Executive Officer at JERA, has been named CEO of JERA Nex bp Japan and will report directly to Nathalie Oosterlinck.

JERA Nex bp will be headquartered in London and will operate under a leadership team that integrates senior talent from both JERA and bp. The JV will draw on the companies’ combined expertise in engineering, project management, and procurement, leveraging long-standing partnerships and market relationships.

The initiative has garnered positive responses from both Japanese and British officials. Takehiko Matsuo, Japan’s Vice-Minister for International Affairs (METI), praised the partnership for uniting top-tier capabilities from Japan and the UK. Meanwhile, Sharon Hodgson MP, UK Trade Envoy to Japan, described the JV as a significant step in bilateral cooperation and a major contribution to global clean energy advancement.
