Kandla’s 1 MW green hydrogen plant boosts India’s clean energy mission, advancing maritime decarbonisation and self-reliant hydrogen infrastructure.

In a landmark step towards India’s clean energy transition, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated a 1 MW green hydrogen plant at the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla. This initiative forms a key component of India’s broader push under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2030 vision for a sustainable and energy-resilient future.

Speaking at the inauguration, Sonowal described the project as a “significant milestone” in India’s green transformation journey. He emphasized that the rapid commissioning of this plant within just four months demonstrates India’s growing capacity for fast-tracking clean energy infrastructure. The 1 MW green hydrogen plant is part of a larger 10 MW facility, the foundation stone for which was laid by Prime Minister Modi during his visit to Bhuj on May 26, 2025.

The new hydrogen facility at Kandla is capable of producing around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. It is expected to play a critical role in supporting the decarbonisation of maritime transport and enhancing sustainability in port operations. Sonowal noted that the implementation of this plant is not only about energy production but also about setting a national precedent for efficiency, technical capability, and vision under the framework of Maritime India Vision 2030.

He praised the Deendayal Port Authority for turning this ambitious vision into reality with remarkable speed and professionalism. DPA’s commitment to eco-friendly practices was further highlighted by its earlier launch of India’s first indigenously built all-electric Green Tug—another step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the country’s ports.

Sonowal also applauded the self-reliance demonstrated in the creation of a fully indigenous hydrogen ecosystem. Developed entirely by Indian engineers, the plant showcases India's engineering excellence and growing expertise in clean technology solutions. “This facility serves as an inspiration to ports across India to adopt sustainable and cutting-edge technologies,” he said.

He went on to commend the leadership of DPA and the engineering efforts of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for executing the project with precision and speed. The collaboration between DPA and L&T has resulted in a future-ready infrastructure that sets a new benchmark in India’s clean energy landscape.

Describing the plant as a symbol of India’s green aspirations, Sonowal reiterated that the National Green Hydrogen Mission is a bold and transformative step under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. “We are entering a new era of sustainable maritime development,” he concluded.
