KPI Green Energy wins NTPC contract to build India’s early plasma gasification-based green hydrogen plant using waste-to-energy technology.

KPI Green Energy has achieved a significant milestone by securing three key contracts from NTPC for the development of a plasma gasification–based green hydrogen project. Valued at approximately Rs. 128.49 crore, the project will be executed at NTPC NETRA located in Greater Noida, and involves the establishment of a 1 tonne-per-day (TPD) green hydrogen production facility. The plant will utilize municipal solid waste (MSW) and agricultural waste as feedstock, making it a landmark initiative in India’s transition towards sustainable and circular energy solutions.

The awarded contracts cover the complete scope of the project, including engineering, procurement, supply, installation, erection, commissioning, and two years of operations and maintenance (O&M). The facility will employ advanced plasma gasification technology, a next-generation waste-to-energy process that converts waste materials into synthesis gas (syngas) under extremely high temperatures. This syngas can then be refined and processed further to generate green hydrogen, enabling clean fuel production while addressing the growing challenge of waste management.

Plasma gasification stands out as a highly efficient and environmentally responsible solution because it can handle diverse waste streams such as MSW, refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and agricultural residues. Unlike conventional waste disposal methods, this technology significantly reduces landfill usage, minimizes harmful emissions, and ensures maximum energy recovery from waste. By integrating this process into hydrogen production, the project aligns environmental remediation with clean energy generation, delivering dual sustainability benefits.

For KPI Green Energy, this project represents its first foray into the green hydrogen segment, marking an important strategic expansion beyond its established renewable energy portfolio, which includes solar, wind, and hybrid power projects. The company’s entry into plasma gasification–based hydrogen generation positions it among the early adopters of this emerging technology in India. This move reflects its long-term vision to diversify into high-growth clean energy domains such as waste-to-energy, advanced bioenergy, and green hydrogen, which are expected to play a crucial role in India’s energy transition.

From NTPC’s perspective, the project supports its broader decarbonization and net-zero ambitions by exploring innovative pathways to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Green hydrogen produced from waste offers a promising alternative fuel for industrial applications, power generation, and future mobility solutions. The project at NTPC NETRA also serves as a demonstration and research-oriented facility, potentially paving the way for scaling up similar technologies across NTPC’s nationwide infrastructure.

Overall, the collaboration highlights a growing convergence between public sector energy majors and private renewable developers to accelerate India’s clean energy agenda. By leveraging KPI Green Energy’s integrated engineering, manufacturing, and execution capabilities alongside NTPC’s institutional expertise, the project sets a strong precedent for innovative, sustainable energy solutions that combine waste management with green fuel production.
