Louis Dreyfus Company expanded its Yorkton complex, adding pea protein production and doubling canola crushing capacity, strengthening Saskatchewan's agricultural value chain.

Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) has officially inaugurated its expanded agri-processing complex in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, marking a major milestone for Canada's agricultural sector. The opening ceremony was attended by Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture David Marit, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Assistant Deputy Minister Tom Rosser, and senior representatives from LDC.

The expansion introduces a state-of-the-art pea protein production facility while significantly increasing the capacity of the site's existing canola crushing plant. The upgraded canola processing unit can now crush more than 2 million metric tons annually, more than doubling its previous processing capability. The investment reflects LDC's commitment to strengthening value-added agricultural processing and supporting the growing demand for plant-based ingredients and canola products.

Provincial leaders welcomed the development, highlighting its expected contribution to Saskatchewan's economy. Premier Scott Moe stated that the investment will generate new employment opportunities while providing local farmers with a dependable and profitable market for their agricultural commodities. He emphasized that Saskatchewan continues to attract major global agribusinesses because of its reliable supply chains, strong agricultural production base, and supportive business environment.

LDC has operated its Yorkton canola crushing facility since 2009. According to Brian Conn, LDC's Country Manager for Canada, the province's skilled agricultural producers and business-friendly conditions made the decision to further expand operations a natural choice. He noted that Saskatchewan remains a strategic location for long-term investments in agricultural processing.

Once the expansion is fully operational by the end of 2026, the Yorkton complex will employ approximately 260 people, representing the creation of 140 new jobs. The additional workforce will support expanded production activities while contributing to regional economic development and creating new skilled employment opportunities.

The project also aligns with Saskatchewan's broader agricultural growth strategy. The province recorded agri-food exports worth $18 billion in 2025, making it the fourth-highest export year on record. The expanded facility supports Saskatchewan's objective of increasing value-added agricultural revenue to $10 billion while advancing its goal of processing 75% of locally grown canola within the province.

Beyond increasing processing capacity, the investment strengthens market access for farmers by providing a more consistent outlet for canola and peas. It also reinforces Saskatchewan's position as a leading destination for agricultural investment. The completion of this project represents another significant multinational investment in the province, where private capital investment climbed 12% to $13.6 billion last year, the highest growth among Canadian provinces.

Impact on Chemical Commodity Prices Tracked by ChemAnalyst

The expanded canola crushing and pea protein production capacity is expected to improve the availability of vegetable oils and protein feedstocks, supporting downstream industries including biodiesel, food ingredients, oleochemicals, and animal nutrition. Greater domestic processing may increase the supply of canola oil and meal, potentially placing mild downward pressure on regional canola oil prices if production outpaces demand. Feedstock availability for fatty acids, glycerine, and other bio-based chemicals could also improve. Meanwhile, increased pea protein production may encourage further investments in plant-based ingredient manufacturing. Overall, ChemAnalyst may observe stable to slightly softer pricing trends for canola-derived chemical feedstocks over the medium term.
