Lhyfe Becomes First French Firm to Earn EU’s Top Green Hydrogen Certification

Lhyfe becomes France’s first RFNBO-certified hydrogen producer, boosting credibility, sustainability, and expansion across Europe’s clean energy market.

Lhyfe, a key player in the global green and renewable hydrogen sector, has become the first French company to receive the prestigious RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) certification for its Bouin site in Vendée, with an installed capacity of 1 MW. This certification, granted on May 23, 2025, marks a significant milestone for Lhyfe and for the renewable hydrogen industry in France. It verifies that the hydrogen produced is sustainable and compliant with the highest environmental standards outlined by the European Union. With this certification, Lhyfe’s customers can now demonstrate the ecological credibility of their hydrogen purchases, making them eligible for European and national support schemes encouraging low-carbon energy.

The RFNBO certification assures that the hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis powered by 100% renewable electricity and that all greenhouse gas emissions throughout the hydrogen’s lifecycle—including production and delivery—are calculated and minimized. This makes it a key tool for decarbonising mobility and industry. Lhyfe is actively working to certify its additional sites in France (Bessières and Buléon) and in Germany (Schwäbisch Gmünd), extending its commitment to certified green hydrogen production across Europe.

Lhyfe's first delivery of RFNBO-certified hydrogen was made on May 28, 2025, to Les Sables d'Olonne in Vendée. The certification not only helps customers meet sustainability goals but also strengthens their access to financial incentives and improves their carbon accounting.

The company achieved this certification in collaboration with three major partners. Atmen provided an advanced compliance automation platform that enables real-time, accurate traceability across the entire production chain. This platform consolidates production input data and generates transparent carbon intensity reports and automated digital certificates. CertifHy played a pivotal role through its CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme, one of the first approved by the European Commission. Developed with industry stakeholders, it has become the reference model for RFNBO certification. TÜV SÜD, among the first authorized certification bodies under the CertifHy scheme, helped validate Lhyfe’s compliance across Europe, supporting its operations in 11 countries with a pipeline of projects totaling 9.1 GW.

Lhyfe’s Bouin site, operational since 2021 and connected to a nearby wind farm using seawater for electrolysis, marked the beginning of its innovative journey. The company has since expanded, operating two 5 MW sites in France, a 10 MW site in Germany, and is building more projects, including a 100 MW site in France backed by a €149 million grant. Offshore hydrogen production is also underway.

Backed by €53 million in EU financing, strong investor support from Mitsui and EDPR, and partnerships with European governments and customers, Lhyfe’s RFNBO certification confirms its leadership and commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
