A lightning strike triggered multiple tank fires at Explorer Pipeline’s Glenpool facility, prompting a major emergency response with no injuries reported.

Emergency crews continue battling a tank fire at the Explorer Pipeline facility in Glenpool, Oklahoma, after lightning reportedly triggered an explosion and subsequent fires early Tuesday.

Authorities said emergency services received a call about an explosion at the pipeline company’s facility near Highway 75 and West 126th Street at approximately 8:33 a.m. The incident began when lightning struck a tank at the Explorer Pipeline Glenpool tank farm, causing an explosion and fire.

According to officials, two tanks initially exploded following the lightning strike. A third tank later caught fire but was extinguished by firefighters. Crews subsequently used firefighting foam to suppress flames in another tank. That tank continues to smolder but is no longer actively burning.

One tank remains on fire, while firefighters work to contain the incident and prevent the flames from spreading to nearby tanks. Emergency teams are also keeping surrounding tanks cool and applying additional foam to the smoldering tank to reduce the risk of reignition.

Approximately 50 emergency personnel remain at the facility as firefighting operations continue. Multiple agencies have joined the response, including the Glenpool Fire Department, Cushing Fire Department, Sinclair Refining Fire Team, Coffeyville Resources Fire Team, Williams Fire and Hazard Control, U.S. Fire Pump, Kiefer Fire Department and Tulsa Fire Department.

The Jenks Fire Department is also assisting by covering emergency calls in Glenpool while local crews remain focused on the pipeline facility.

Explorer Pipeline said local firefighters and emergency response teams secured the site following the lightning-related fire, while additional firefighting resources were dispatched to support the operation.

Authorities have closed West 126th Street between Casper Avenue and Elwood Avenue and advised motorists to avoid the affected area. Highway 75 remains open, although drivers have been urged to exercise caution. Alternate routes are available near West 121st Street South and South Elwood Avenue.

A voluntary evacuation recommendation remains in effect for the area between West 126th and West 131st streets, South Elwood Avenue and Highway 75. Residents in the affected zone may return if they choose. The earlier shelter-in-place recommendation has been lifted, although officials continue to advise residents to remain indoors and limit outdoor exposure while firefighting operations continue.

No injuries or additional fires have been reported so far.

Impact on Products and Chemical Commodity Prices

The incident could temporarily affect petroleum products, crude oil derivatives and natural-gas-related commodities if firefighting operations disrupt storage, handling or pipeline activity at the Glenpool facility. Any prolonged shutdown could tighten regional supply and increase logistical constraints, potentially supporting prices for gasoline, diesel and other refined petroleum products. However, the immediate market impact is likely to remain limited if the fire is contained quickly and pipeline operations continue without major interruptions. For commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, sustained supply disruptions could create short-term bullish pressure, while a rapid resolution would likely prevent significant price increases. Localized volatility may persist until operations fully normalize.
