LOHUM has dispatched its first lithium ore from Zimbabwe, strengthening India’s position across mining, refining, manufacturing, and recycling.

LOHUM has announced the dispatch of the first tranche of lithium ore from its mining assets in Zimbabwe’s Matabeleland South Province, marking the beginning of its primary lithium operations in the country.

According to the company, the shipment represents the first output from its Zimbabwe operations and establishes LOHUM as the first Indian company to commence lithium mining activities globally. The development also marks a significant expansion of its critical materials business, extending its existing capabilities in lithium refining, advanced manufacturing, and battery-material recycling upstream into primary mineral supply.

LOHUM has secured mining rights for 10 spodumene-bearing lithium blocks in Matabeleland South Province. The blocks collectively cover approximately 1,100 hectares and are estimated to contain between 30 million and 40 million tonnes of spodumene ore. Based on prevailing lithium carbonate prices, the company estimates that the deposits have an in-situ value of approximately USD 7 billion.

The company also holds an option to acquire up to 90 additional mining blocks located adjacent to its existing assets. If exercised, the option could provide substantial expansion potential and increase LOHUM’s primary spodumene resource base in the region by as much as tenfold.

LOHUM plans to leverage existing spodumene concentration facilities located near its mining assets to support initial processing requirements. At the same time, the company intends to develop its own concentration capacity in Zimbabwe, enabling greater control over the processing and supply chain.

Rajat Verma, Founder and CEO of LOHUM, said the first shipment represents the start of the company’s lithium operations in Zimbabwe. He highlighted the strategic importance of establishing an integrated supply chain that can move lithium from mining through refining and cathode production before recovering the material through recycling at the end of its useful life.

Verma also emphasized LOHUM’s intention to develop local processing capabilities rather than simply exporting mined ore. The company believes that local value addition could help distribute economic benefits while reducing supply-chain costs.

LOHUM further pointed to lithium’s importance in determining battery costs, with batteries representing one of the largest cost components of electric vehicles. The company expects shorter transportation distances, integrated refining, and reduced exposure to volatile international lithium prices to improve supply-chain economics.

The Zimbabwe operation could therefore become an important component of LOHUM’s strategy to build an integrated lithium ecosystem while supporting India’s efforts to secure critical mineral supplies for the growing electric-vehicle and energy-storage industries.

Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The development is bullish for lithium supply security but could be moderately bearish for lithium prices over the longer term if LOHUM scales production significantly. Additional spodumene supply from Zimbabwe could increase concentrate availability and reduce dependence on established producers, potentially limiting upward pressure on lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide prices. However, the immediate price impact should remain limited because the initial shipment represents a relatively small volume, while mine development and processing capacity will take time to scale.
