Mitsubishi Power completes Egypt’s first hydrogen boiler conversion at ANRPC, advancing decarbonization, hydrogen adoption, and sustainable energy leadership.

Mitsubishi Power, a core brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has successfully completed a groundbreaking hydrogen fuel conversion project at the Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC) refinery in Egypt. This marks a significant technological achievement, representing the first industrial use of hydrogen as a fuel for an industrial boiler in both Egypt and the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The project, initiated under a full turnkey contract announced in 2022, involved the complete design, engineering, supply, and installation of advanced equipment and control systems by Mitsubishi Power. The primary objective was to rehabilitate and modernize a main boiler with a capacity of 100 tons per hour, transitioning it from traditional fuels like heavy fuel oil and natural gas to run exclusively on 100% hydrogen. The conversion enables the use of 14,000 tons of hydrogen-rich gases annually—gases that are by-products of the refinery’s processes—while simultaneously cutting natural gas usage by about 24,000 tons and slashing carbon emissions by approximately 65,000 tons per year.

This innovative project significantly advances Egypt’s national strategy to reduce carbon emissions and transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. It aligns with the goals outlined in Egypt Vision 2030 and supports the country’s ongoing efforts to play a leading role in clean energy innovation across the MENA region. Mitsubishi Power's cutting-edge hydrogen technologies, combined with ANRPC's operational capabilities, were critical to the project's success and demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating hydrogen fuel into existing industrial infrastructures.

Mr. Sayed Al-Rawi, Chairman and Managing Director of ANRPC, emphasized the transformative nature of the project, stating that it not only represents a major milestone for ANRPC but also sets a benchmark for Egypt and the entire region. He highlighted that the integration of hydrogen into industrial refining processes contributes directly to Egypt’s environmental objectives by significantly lowering the nation’s carbon footprint. He also expressed gratitude for the strong partnership with Mitsubishi Power, which has proven how international collaboration and innovative technology can lead to impactful energy solutions.

Javier Cavada, President and CEO for Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Mitsubishi Power, described the project as a key milestone in Egypt’s clean energy transformation. He reiterated Mitsubishi Power’s commitment to helping countries shift existing infrastructure to low-carbon alternatives without substantial operational downtime. According to Cavada, this initiative demonstrates the practical and scalable application of hydrogen technologies to reduce emissions and modernize industrial energy systems.

As Egypt positions itself at the forefront of the hydrogen economy, this successful hydrogen fuel conversion project showcases a replicable model for similar efforts across the MENA region. Mitsubishi Power remains steadfast in its mission to support Egypt’s energy goals and promote broader hydrogen and renewable energy adoption throughout the region.
