ORLEN begins Rózansko gas production, boosting Poland’s energy security, supporting industry, and advancing its Strategy 2035 domestic and international growth goals.

ORLEN has taken another significant step in strengthening Poland’s domestic energy supply by launching production at the Rózansko natural gas field, located in the West Pomeranian region. The newly commissioned field contains recoverable reserves estimated at around 1.2 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas and forms an integral part of the broader expansion programme underway at the Debno Oil and Gas Extraction Facility. Through this development, ORLEN aims not only to unlock new resources but also to enhance output from other producing assets across the region.

Domestic hydrocarbon production remains a vital pillar of Poland’s energy security strategy. At present, indigenous resources supply roughly one-fifth of the country’s total natural gas demand, amounting to approximately 3.5 bcm annually. According to Wieslaw Prugar, a member of ORLEN’s Management Board responsible for upstream operations, the company intends to steadily expand this contribution as national gas demand rises in the coming years. ORLEN has set a clear objective to increase domestic production to 4 bcm per year by 2030, reinforcing the country’s resilience against external supply shocks.

The hydrocarbons extracted by ORLEN play a crucial role across multiple sectors of the Polish economy. Natural gas supports electricity generation and district heating systems, while domestically produced crude oil is processed by Polish refineries and petrochemical plants. In addition, sulphur recovered during production is an essential raw material for industries such as fertiliser manufacturing and tyre production. Together, these outputs underline the broader economic significance of upstream investments like Rózansko.

At peak production, the Rózansko field is expected to add up to 130 million cubic metres (mcm) of natural gas per year to Poland’s domestic supply. ORLEN plans to operate the field for approximately two decades, coinciding with the period when national gas demand is forecast to reach its highest levels. Gas produced from Rózansko will primarily be directed to combined heat and power (CHP) plants serving the cities of Kostrzyn nad Odra and Gorzów Wielkopolski, ensuring reliable energy for local communities. Alongside gas, the field will also yield crude oil and liquid sulphur, which will be supplied to domestic industrial customers. Part of this output is enabled by a newly installed gas desulphurisation unit.

The development of the Rózansko field involved modernising three existing production wells and expanding associated surface infrastructure. A key element of the project was the construction of a new pipeline connecting the field directly to the Debno Oil and Gas Extraction Facility, one of the largest gas processing hubs in the country. This integration enhances operational efficiency and allows for greater flexibility in managing production from surrounding fields.

As part of the wider upgrade, the Debno facility has been equipped with an 8 MW cogeneration unit powered by gas sourced from nearby deposits. This unit enables the site to be fully self-sufficient in electricity and process heat, while any surplus power can be exported to the national grid. The expanded infrastructure has also made it possible to raise output from the adjacent Cychry field, further boosting regional production capacity.

Strengthening domestic output is a core objective of ORLEN’s Strategy 2035, which prioritises secure and sustainable energy supplies. Beyond Poland, the ORLEN Group continues to advance upstream projects on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and pursue additional international investments. Through these combined efforts, the company aims to reach total equity gas production of 12 bcm by the end of the decade, reinforcing its position as a key energy player in Europe.
