Plug Power demonstrates scalable green hydrogen delivery in Germany, completes H2CAST deliveries, and secures additional 35-ton contract.

Plug Power Inc., a global frontrunner in comprehensive hydrogen solutions for the emerging hydrogen economy, has successfully completed the first phase of hydrogen deliveries to the H2CAST (Hydrogen Cavern Storage Transition) project in Germany. This initial phase involved the safe transport and delivery of 44.5 metric tons of hydrogen to the H2CAST salt cavern storage facility. H2CAST is a collaborative initiative led by Gasunie, a major energy infrastructure company managing gas pipelines in the Netherlands and North West Germany, and STORAG ETZEL, Germany’s largest independent operator of cavern storage facilities. The project focuses on repurposing two existing salt caverns into underground storage sites for renewable hydrogen, a crucial component of Europe’s energy transition. By enabling high-capacity, seasonal hydrogen storage, these caverns support grid stability, provide flexibility for integrating renewable energy, and guarantee a steady supply of hydrogen to industrial users, thereby strengthening the European hydrogen infrastructure.

Between April and August 2025, Plug executed the hydrogen deliveries to H2CAST with precision, demonstrating that large-scale hydrogen transport and storage in Germany is both feasible and reliable. Following this successful initial deployment, Plug secured a second delivery contract to supply an additional 35 metric tons of hydrogen to the same facility. The hydrogen will continue to be sourced from Plug’s Hy2Gen ATLANTIS electrolyzer facility in Werlte, Germany, where the company maintains exclusive rights to all green hydrogen produced.

Jose Luis Crespo, President and Chief Revenue Officer of Plug, emphasized the strategic significance of these accomplishments: “The success of our H2CAST deliveries highlights hydrogen’s practicality and scalability to meet critical national energy needs. Plug’s ability to transport hydrogen efficiently, on schedule, and using our proprietary fleet and equipment reinforces our leadership in Europe’s rapidly expanding hydrogen sector.”

Plug’s operations in Germany reflect its wider European objectives: establishing a comprehensive network of hydrogen production and delivery capabilities across the European Union. The company’s fleet of 36 Multi Element Gas Containers (MEGCs), rated at 350/380 bar, underpins a flexible and scalable delivery system, allowing Plug to meet increasing market demand through a vertically integrated approach.

Additionally, the H2CAST project highlights Plug’s engineering expertise. The Netherlands-based team designed a specialized unloading skid tailored to seamlessly integrate trailer operations into the facility’s infrastructure, ensuring efficient hydrogen delivery while maximizing commercial value for customers.

By providing both green hydrogen production and delivery solutions, Plug is demonstrating that hydrogen is ready for large-scale deployment and a central role in Europe’s energy mix. These achievements in Germany form a critical foundation for Plug’s ongoing expansion across Europe, reinforcing its position as a global industrial gas company and a leading player in the international hydrogen ecosystem.
