Plug Power will supply 55 MW of GenEco electrolyzers for three UK projects, boosting green hydrogen production, regional decarbonization, and national energy security.

Plug Power Inc., a leading global provider of end-to-end hydrogen solutions, has been chosen by Carlton Power to supply equipment and long-term servicing for a total of 55 MW of GenEco electrolyzer capacity across three major green hydrogen projects in the United Kingdom. This selection, which remains contingent on final investment decisions (FIDs), represents the largest combined electrolyzer contract awarded in the UK to date. The agreement covers 30 MW for the Barrow-in-Furness Green Hydrogen project in Cumbria, 15 MW for the Trafford Green Hydrogen project in Greater Manchester, and 10 MW for the Langage Green Hydrogen project in Plymouth.

The Barrow-in-Furness project is being developed through Carlton Power’s joint venture with Schroders Greencoat and will incorporate six 5 MW Plug Power GenEco PEM electrolyzers. These units will use renewable electricity to generate green hydrogen. Under a confirmed offtake agreement, the project will supply hydrogen to Kimberly-Clark’s nearby manufacturing plant, enabling the company to significantly cut carbon emissions from its operations. With a total capacity of 30 MW, Barrow-in-Furness is positioned to become a central anchor for the hydrogen economy across Northwest England once operational.

In Greater Manchester, Plug Power will provide 15 MW of GenEco PEM electrolyzers for the Trafford Green Hydrogen project. Located within the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park, this initiative is one of the UK’s flagship green hydrogen developments and supports the region’s broader industrial and transportation decarbonization ambitions. By producing green hydrogen from renewable and low-carbon electricity sources, the site will supply fuel to a diverse mix of users—from manufacturing industries and heavy transport providers to municipal fleets. The project is slated to begin operations in 2027 and plays a crucial role in Greater Manchester’s long-term strategy to achieve net-zero emissions.

The Langage Green Hydrogen project in Plymouth will deploy two 5 MW Plug Power GenEco PEM electrolyzers. Initially aimed at decarbonizing industrial customers, the project is designed to scale over time. As hydrogen demand rises, the facility will be equipped to serve additional sectors such as commercial transport, passenger mobility, and even local heating networks. This adaptability positions the Langage development as a future-ready contributor to the UK’s evolving hydrogen landscape.

All three projects have secured support through the UK Government’s Hydrogen Business Model under Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1). FIDs for Barrow-in-Furness and Trafford are expected by the end of 2025, while Langage’s FID is targeted for early 2026. Collectively, these initiatives are poised to strengthen the UK’s hydrogen infrastructure, enhance regional energy security, and accelerate industrial decarbonization by providing a reliable supply of low-carbon hydrogen.

Plug Power emphasized that this partnership highlights the company’s expanding leadership position in Europe. With operational experience that includes the largest electrolytic liquid hydrogen production facility in the United States—and additional projects underway in Tennessee and Louisiana—the company’s GenEco technology offers high efficiency, robust performance, and comprehensive service support. Carlton Power noted that working with Plug Power enables the deployment of proven, scalable technology backed by long-term operational expertise.

As Plug Power continues advancing multi-gigawatt hydrogen developments across Europe, including in Spain and the UK, the Carlton Power partnership reinforces its commitment to making green hydrogen economically viable and accessible for industrial, utility, and infrastructure users worldwide.
