Samsung E&A and Nel launched CompassH2-A+, a compact 100 MW pressurized alkaline electrolysis platform for efficient large-scale green hydrogen production.

Samsung E&A and Nel Hydrogen ASA have introduced CompassH2-A+, a new 100-megawatt pressurized alkaline electrolysis platform designed to accelerate large-scale green hydrogen production. The solution was officially launched during the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam and represents the latest addition to the CompassH2 product family. With this launch, the CompassH2 portfolio now includes atmospheric alkaline, pressurized alkaline, and Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysis technologies, allowing developers to select systems tailored to varying operational and renewable energy requirements.

CompassH2-A+ utilizes Nel’s pressurized alkaline electrolyzer technology integrated into modular, containerized 25 MW stack units. The compact architecture significantly minimizes installation space requirements, reducing the overall plant footprint by nearly 50 percent compared with many competing systems currently available in the market. In addition to the space-saving design, the system generates hydrogen at a pressure of 15 barg, reducing reliance on expensive downstream compression infrastructure and simplifying plant configuration.

The standard 100 MW CompassH2-A+ configuration is capable of producing around 40 tonnes of high-purity hydrogen per day at 99.999 mol-percent purity. The platform also delivers strong energy performance, achieving stack efficiency levels of 48.8 kWh per kilogram. Despite its substantial output capacity, the core production facility occupies only about 7,500 square meters, highlighting the platform’s efficiency-focused engineering approach.

A major feature of the new offering is Samsung E&A’s integrated “wrap guarantee” structure. Under this arrangement, the company provides a single performance commitment that covers the entire hydrogen production system, including electrolyzer stacks, balance-of-plant systems, and utility infrastructure. This unified guarantee model addresses long-standing concerns surrounding fragmented responsibilities and multiple counterparties that have traditionally complicated financing and risk assessments for hydrogen projects.

The partnership also includes a comprehensive Long-Term Service Agreement that supports customers throughout the facility’s operational lifespan. Services include ongoing operational assistance, scheduled stack replacements, and continuous real-time monitoring to optimize system performance. Because CompassH2-A+ is delivered as a pre-engineered platform, it can also substantially reduce the Pre-FID (Final Investment Decision) timeline by eliminating months of preliminary engineering work that often delays project development.

Dr. Hyunseok Jeong, Green Hydrogen Business Team Leader at Samsung E&A, stated that CompassH2-A+ was developed not only for technical performance but also to improve commercial viability and financing confidence. According to Jeong, the expanded CompassH2 portfolio gives customers greater flexibility in selecting technologies that best match individual project demands.

Beyond hydrogen generation, Samsung E&A also supports downstream applications such as green ammonia, e-methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel production through its integrated EPC capabilities. This broader value-chain involvement helps reduce development risks for investors, lenders, and project developers.

CompassH2-A+ follows the release of CompassH2-P in late 2025 and marks another significant milestone in the long-term collaboration between Nel and Samsung E&A. Both companies plan to continue expanding their electrolysis technology portfolio to strengthen competitiveness in the rapidly growing global green hydrogen sector.
