Sembcorp completes US$4.32 billion Alinta acquisition, adding 10.4GW pipeline and accelerating renewable energy and storage expansion across Australia.

Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries has successfully completed the acquisition of Australian energy company Alinta Energy from Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook Enterprises in a deal valued at AU$6.5 billion (US$4.32 billion). Initially announced in December 2025, the transaction marks one of the largest utility acquisitions in Australia in recent years and significantly expands Sembcorp’s energy footprint in the country.

The acquisition received final approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) after previously securing clearance from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). With all regulatory requirements fulfilled, Sembcorp has officially integrated Alinta Energy into its portfolio under its ‘Renewables East’ business division, which oversees operations and growth strategies across China, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The division will continue to be led by Alex Tan, President and CEO of Renewables East.

Through the acquisition, Sembcorp gains access to Alinta’s diversified energy portfolio, which includes 3.4GW of existing installed and contracted generation capacity along with a substantial 10.4GW renewable and low-carbon project development pipeline. Alinta’s current generation assets span coalnatural gas, wind, and solar technologies, supported by a highly reliable dispatchable energy portfolio with an availability rate of approximately 93%.

Sembcorp has confirmed that Alinta’s existing leadership team and operational framework will remain unchanged. Alinta Managing Director and CEO Jeff Dimery will continue to oversee daily business operations, ensuring continuity for employees, customers, and stakeholders. Additionally, Sembcorp will continue supporting Alinta’s Community Development Fund and its broader socio-economic initiatives aimed at benefiting local communities.

According to Alex Tan, the acquisition represents a strategic milestone for Sembcorp, strengthening its presence in a mature and strategically important energy market. By combining Sembcorp’s international renewable energy expertise, financial capabilities, and access to capital with Alinta’s experienced workforce and extensive development pipeline, the company aims to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy projects and contribute to Australia’s transition towards a lower-carbon energy system.

Australia has been identified as a crucial market in Sembcorp’s long-term strategy to increase its global renewable energy capacity to 25GW by 2028. The company plans to invest additional capital in Australia to advance Alinta’s pipeline of renewable energy, battery storage, and low-carbon infrastructure projects.

A major component of Alinta’s future growth strategy involves large-scale energy storage developments across South Australia, Western Australia, and New South Wales. In South Australia, Alinta is progressing with the first phase of its Reeves Plains Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a 250MW/1,000MWh project located around 60 kilometres north of Adelaide. Scheduled to begin operations in 2028, the facility will become one of the state’s largest battery storage projects. It forms part of a broader 500MW/2,000MWh energy hub, approved through a final investment decision in 2025 and featuring 194 battery units supplied by CATL.

In Western Australia, Alinta is expanding energy storage capabilities at its Wagerup site. The company has received approval to build a new 300MW BESS near the existing Wagerup Power Station, complementing an ongoing 100MW/200MWh battery project. These developments are intended to improve grid stability and facilitate greater integration of solar and other intermittent renewable energy resources.

Meanwhile, in New South Wales, Alinta is advancing the 900MW Oven Mountain pumped hydro energy storage project, which will provide 7.2GWh of long-duration energy storage. Located within the New England Renewable Energy Zone, the off-river pumped hydro facility is designed to deliver up to eight hours of dispatchable electricity at full generation capacity. The project remains in the design phase and represents one of Australia’s most significant long-duration energy storage initiatives.

With Alinta’s broad energy portfolio and extensive development pipeline, Sembcorp has significantly strengthened its position in Australia’s rapidly evolving energy sector while advancing its global ambitions in renewable power, energy storage, and sustainable infrastructure.
