Shanghai Electric supplied biomethanol for a record 8,000-ton bunkering operation, strengthening China's green-fuel supply chain and maritime decarbonization efforts.

Shanghai Electric has strengthened its position in China’s green-fuel industry after participating in a record-setting biomethanol bunkering operation at Shanghai Yangshan Port on August 17. The company partnered with Shanghai International Port Group and CMA CGM Group to complete an 8,000-metric-ton biomethanol bunkering operation, described as the largest single biomethanol bunkering event recorded globally.

The operation, conducted under the theme “Green Fueled Globe, Lead the Future,” represents an important milestone for the development of alternative marine fuels. It also demonstrates the growing ability of China’s green-methanol industry to support large-scale international shipping requirements.

Shanghai Electric’s Taonan green methanol project in Jilin Province served as the primary biomethanol supplier for the operation. The successful delivery highlights the project’s progress toward stable production, commercial-scale output and large-volume supply. It also demonstrates the increasing integration between renewable energy resources, biomass feedstocks and marine-fuel applications.

A major factor behind the operation was the development of an interconnected green-fuel supply chain spanning multiple provinces. At the Shanghai International Shipping Green Fuel Sustainable-Development Conference on June 30, Shanghai, Jilin and Liaoning launched a jointly developed green-fuel transportation corridor. The route connects biomethanol production in Taonan, Jilin, with Dalian Port for transportation, storage and logistics before the fuel reaches Shanghai Port for ship bunkering.

Shanghai Electric’s Taonan facility serves as the key production base for this corridor. The project uses Jilin’s abundant wind and solar resources alongside biomass feedstocks to manufacture biomethanol. The company has deployed its independently developed process systems and core equipment, creating a large-scale facility designed to combine renewable electricity with biomass-based production.

The project is particularly significant because it supports the requirements of Shanghai’s international shipping industry and contributes to the development of major green-fuel hubs for maritime transportation.

Shanghai Electric plans to expand its activities across the green-fuel value chain, including production, storage, transportation and end-use applications. The company also intends to accelerate research into key technologies and improve its integrated green-fuel solutions.

In addition, Shanghai Electric is working with partners on the second phase of its Taonan project, which integrates green hydrogen, biomass gasification, green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel production. The expansion is expected to strengthen the company’s ability to supply lower-carbon fuels to both maritime and aviation markets while supporting China’s broader dual-carbon objectives.

Product Impact + Impact on Chemical Commodity Prices

The record biomethanol bunkering operation is bullish for biomethanol and green methanol demand, as it demonstrates commercial-scale adoption by major shipping players. Successful 8,000-ton delivery could encourage additional marine-fuel contracts, supporting production expansion and long-term demand. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, stronger methanol demand may provide upward price support for methanol, particularly in Asia if bunkering demand accelerates. However, the immediate price impact is likely limited because one operation does not materially alter global supply-demand balances. Over the medium term, greater green-methanol adoption could increase conventional methanol market competition while creating opportunities for sustainable methanol premiums and related low-carbon chemical products.
