This collaboration aims to accelerate Oman's clean energy transition and solidify SOHAR's role as a key hub for sustainable industrial growth.
In a pivotal move towards bolstering Oman's clean energy future, SOHAR Port and Freezone today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HYNAT SA, a leading Swiss pioneer in the research, exploration, and exploitation of hydrogen. This strategic alliance is set to drive the comprehensive development of a natural hydrogen value chain within the Sultanate of Oman, marking a significant stride in the nation's energy diversification efforts.
The collaboration will primarily focus on establishing a robust hydrogen ecosystem within the SOHAR region, with particular emphasis on natural hydrogen as an emerging and highly promising low-carbon energy source. The scope of this ambitious partnership encompasses several critical areas, including the meticulous identification and assessment of potential natural hydrogen production sites across Oman. Furthermore, the agreement outlines plans for the development of essential logistics corridors, ensuring efficient transportation, and the creation of dedicated infrastructure for both storage and processing of natural hydrogen. Beyond production and infrastructure, the initiative will also involve a thorough mapping of demand across various sectors such as industry, mobility, and logistics, while simultaneously exploring the vast export potential of this nascent low-carbon energy resource.
This newly inked agreement builds upon a foundational MoU previously signed between HYNAT SA and the Omani Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM) in February 2025. That initial agreement granted HYNAT the exclusive rights to conduct comprehensive feasibility studies related to natural hydrogen within the Sultanate. The joint roadmap between SOHAR Port and Freezone and HYNAT SA is meticulously designed with defined operational targets and a clear development timeline, all of which are strategically aligned with Oman's broader clean energy transition strategy encapsulated in Vision 2040.
SOHAR Port and Freezone continues to exemplify its leadership role in actively supporting Oman’s Vision 2040. This is achieved through its consistent promotion of strategic investments in renewable energy initiatives, fostering industrial decarbonization efforts, and championing sustainable logistics solutions. With HYNAT SA’s cutting-edge geological expertise and its innovative AI-powered detection technologies, this partnership is uniquely positioned to explore the significant, yet largely untapped, potential of natural hydrogen. This emerging energy source is increasingly recognized as a critical component in the global effort to diversify the energy mix and achieve a more sustainable future. The collaboration between SOHAR Port and Freezone and HYNAT SA signifies a bold step forward in harnessing this potential for the benefit of Oman and the global energy landscape.
