Technip Energies has secured the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract from bp for the H2Teesside project, located in the North East of the United Kingdom. H2Teesside is projected to become one of the largest low-carbon hydrogen production facilities in the UK, incorporating advanced carbon capture technology. As part of the FEED study, Technip Energies will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive and detailed design for this large-scale project by integrating hydrogen production with carbon capture, leveraging their in-house expertise and global best practices. This strategic approach is crucial in setting the foundation for a final investment decision expected in 2025. Should Technip Energies be selected for the subsequent phases, they would oversee the full Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) of the facility.
The H2Teesside project plays a significant role within the East Coast Cluster, with its hydrogen production and distribution pipeline integrated into other regional decarbonization initiatives. One of the critical elements of the project is the exportation of captured CO2 to the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) CO2 gathering system, ensuring that the facility contributes to broader carbon reduction goals across the region. The collaboration aims to support the UK’s decarbonization targets, driving the nation closer to a sustainable energy future.
Mario Tommaselli, Senior Vice President of Gas and Low Carbon Energies at Technip Energies, emphasized the importance of being chosen for this landmark project. “Being selected for bp’s H2Teesside project underscores Technip Energies’ extensive experience as a technology integrator on large-scale projects. By harnessing our expertise in hydrogen and carbon capture technologies, we are well-positioned to deliver innovative, scalable solutions that align with the UK’s ambitious decarbonization targets,” he stated. This recognition highlights Technip Energies’ commitment to delivering advanced, reliable solutions in the energy transition landscape.
Andy Lane, Vice President for Hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) at bp in the UK, emphasized the project’s significance in shaping the future of Teesside and the broader hydrogen economy. Lane noted that these agreements represent critical milestones as H2Teesside advances toward securing EPC contracts and, eventually, entering the construction phase. He highlighted the project’s potential to decarbonize industries in the region, transforming Teesside into a key hydrogen hub and kickstarting the UK’s low-carbon hydrogen economy.
The successful execution of H2Teesside would not only support regional decarbonization goals but also position the UK as a leader in low-carbon hydrogen production, driving global progress toward cleaner energy solutions.
