thyssenkrupp nucera commissioned a renewable-powered chlor-alkali plant in Brazil, boosting sustainable chlorine production and expanding Chlorum Solutions’ regional manufacturing capacity.

thyssenkrupp nucera has completed the handover and commissioning of a new chlor-alkali electrolysis plant for Chlorum Solutions at its production site in Palmeira, Brazil. The facility is now fully operational following a successful startup, achieved through close coordination between thyssenkrupp nucera’s international project teams and Chlorum Solutions’ local workforce.

The project was delivered under an engineering and procurement (EP) contract and features thyssenkrupp nucera’s skid-mounted chlor-alkali plant concept. This modular design enables faster installation, lower construction costs, and simplified transportation through standardized container-sized units. The approach helped streamline project execution while ensuring the facility met operational targets within the expected timeline.

At the heart of the plant is thyssenkrupp nucera’s BM2.7 membrane electrolysis technology. The zero-gap membrane system is designed to improve energy efficiency while reducing electricity consumption. Its larger usable membrane area and optimized cell configuration allow higher operational performance, making it well suited for modern chlor-alkali production. According to Dr. Gerhard Henßen, CEO of thyssenkrupp nucera Italy, the project demonstrates the company's long-standing expertise in chlor-alkali technology and its ability to support customers through every stage of a project, from engineering to commissioning.

Chlorum Solutions focuses on constructing and operating small-scale chlorine production facilities that manufacture chlorine, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hypochlorite. The modular skid-mounted design specifically addresses the needs of regional chlorine producers by reducing installation time and capital expenditure while providing operational flexibility.

A key feature of the Palmeira facility is its commitment to sustainability. The plant operates entirely on electricity generated from renewable energy sources, aligning with Chlorum Solutions’ environmental objectives. The project also satisfies strict requirements related to energy efficiency, lower environmental impact, and sustainable chemical production.

Jonathan Franklin, Global CEO of Chlorum Solutions, stated that the project highlights the importance of reliable technology, experienced project execution, and strong collaboration in meeting the chemical industry's operational, safety, and environmental standards. He added that the facility was developed to strengthen the supply of essential industrial chemicals across regional markets in Brazil.

The new plant has an annual chlorine production capacity exceeding 15,000 metric tons, supporting Chlorum Solutions’ expansion strategy in Brazil. Earlier in February, the company commissioned another thyssenkrupp nucera skid-mounted chlor-alkali plant in Minas Gerais with the same BM2.7 single-cell membrane electrolysis technology and an identical production capacity. Both facilities were engineered and executed simultaneously, further strengthening the partnership between the two companies while expanding sustainable chlor-alkali production across the country.

Impact on Product

The commissioning of the new chlor-alkali facility will increase the regional availability of chlorine, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and sodium hypochlorite in Brazil. The additional annual chlorine capacity of over 15,000 metric tons is expected to improve supply reliability for industries such as water treatment, pulp and paper, chemicals, mining, and PVC manufacturing. The renewable-powered and energy-efficient production process may also lower operating costs over time, supporting more sustainable production and improving the competitiveness of Chlorum Solutions in Brazil's chlor-alkali market.
