thyssenkrupp nucera and Moeve partner to build Southern Europe’s largest green hydrogen project, advancing scalable production and accelerating regional decarbonization efforts.
thyssenkrupp nucera has entered into a significant agreement with Moeve to support the development of what is set to become the largest green hydrogen project in Southern Europe. The contract covers engineering, procurement, fabrication, and supply (EPF) services, under which thyssenkrupp nucera will deliver its advanced alkaline water electrolysis technology with a total installed capacity of 300 megawatts (MW). This collaboration represents another major milestone in the ongoing partnership between the two companies as Moeve advances its ambitious Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley initiative.
The project will be located at the La Rábida Energy Park, a key industrial hub in southern Spain. As part of the first phase of development—known as Onuba—thyssenkrupp nucera will supply 15 standardized electrolyzer modules, each with a capacity of 20 MW. Once operational, Onuba is expected to be the largest green hydrogen production facility in Southern Europe. Earlier in March, Moeve confirmed its final investment decision (FID), marking a decisive step toward bringing the project to fruition and initiating large-scale construction activities.
Leadership from both organizations emphasized the strategic importance of the Iberian Peninsula in Europe’s green hydrogen landscape. Werner Ponikwar highlighted that the region offers some of the most favorable conditions for producing renewable hydrogen at scale. He noted that projects like Onuba demonstrate how strong fundamentals—such as resource availability, infrastructure, and industrial demand—can enable large investments even amid uncertain market conditions. He further underscored thyssenkrupp nucera’s readiness to contribute its industrial-scale electrolysis expertise to support Moeve’s long-term vision of achieving gigawatt-level hydrogen production.
From Moeve’s perspective, the project is a cornerstone of its strategy to establish a robust clean energy hub in southern Spain. Maarten Wetselaar stated that the company aims to deliver one of Europe’s most extensive green hydrogen platforms, focused on supplying renewable fuels and enhancing both energy security and industrial resilience across the continent. He emphasized that the partnership combines thyssenkrupp nucera’s technological strength with Moeve’s capabilities in managing and integrating large, complex energy projects.
With a planned capacity of 300 MW, the Onuba facility is projected to produce approximately 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This output is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 250,000 tonnes each year, contributing significantly to Europe’s decarbonization goals. Beyond its initial phase, the project is part of a broader vision under the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley program, which aims to develop a scalable and integrated hydrogen value chain in southern Spain.
The region’s abundant solar and wind resources make it an ideal location for cost-competitive green hydrogen production. Additionally, well-established port infrastructure and transport networks will enable efficient distribution of hydrogen and its derivatives to industrial centers across northern Europe. This connectivity is expected to play a vital role in accelerating the transition to low-carbon energy systems across the continent, positioning southern Spain as a key exporter of renewable hydrogen in the coming decades.
